Enough is Enough #stopthearmsrace. The exponential growth of pre-residency publications, frequently favoring quantity over quality, HAS to stop. Our automatic calculator ( permits rapid calculation. Programs in multiple specialties are already using ARCS.
New @NeurosurgeryCNS: a proposed solution to the publication “arms race” - #ArmsRaceControlScore. ARCS quantifies authorship effort, disincentivizes quantity over quality, and offers meaningful comparison of #ResidencyApplicants. Designed by @bowersbrainsurg @MichaelKogan20

This is vital work - exposing & illuminating those that are corrupting the scientific peer -review process .We in science have to clean this up before we can advance science as we ought to. We have been lazy as a field.
More academic editors in PLoS ONE are suspected to get involved in manipulation of the publication process:

It is really sad though…it’s almost like they learned the right things to say and learned that the system (the game) doesn’t really care if they do the right things, as long as they say them loud enough. Talk is superficial & cheap, people’s actions reveal who they really are.

Proud to continue supporting #REAMortho.as they define frailty within orthopedics, utilizing the RAI (risk analysis index). These papers provide a critical foundation for future ortho frailty research so that RAI, and not mFI, is used. Great work team! #frailtyfighter

Thanks for your thoughtful comments & for the passion. This interest in the dialogue & discussion is what we need so we can all come together as a community and lead the way for medical education by fixing this problem! @EladLevyMD @MichaelKogan20 @NeurosurgeryCNS #ARCS.
Honored to engage with @BowersNsgyLab on their thoughtful proposal to stop the neurosurgery publication arms race. A key concern: potential for ARCS to be artificially inflated via low impact, first-author papers in predatory journals. Grateful for their constructive response.

Strong work @gilperezMD Dr. Sarah Menacho has been my of my closest neurosurgery colleagues & a great friend ever since I started residency & she was a pgy2 (2009). She is vice chair & director of the neuroICU @UofUNeurosurg & is an absolute star. Thx for your patience Sarah.
Check out our latest study on frailty in shunt surgery for non-NPH hydrocephalus. RAI measured frailty emerged as a strong predictor of outcomes!. Big thanks to @bowersbrainsurg and Dr. Menacho for their guidance and mentorship. Great work by the whole team!

This paper is going to be highly influential within orthopedics and #frailty for many years to come. The #RAI risk analysis index always outperforms the modified frailty index (mFI) with predicting adverse outcomes with surgical procedures. Huge # of pts in this study!.
Check out our latest study in @JAMANetworkOpen showing the utility of frailty in hip fracture patients!. We show in 100k+ older adults with surgically treated hip fractures, the RAI outperforms the mFI-5 in predicting 30-day mortality (AUC 0.73 vs 0.61).

Huge thanks to @Jun_kiim for his time, support, & insights, as we discussed our new breakthrough, a patented AI/Deep Learning digital tool that assesses the time spent & quality of work done for each researcher contributing to a project. We will change science together #VEriFY
Great chance to meet with @bowersbrainsurg and hear his visionary work on disrupting the “research arms race” and encouraging meaningful, impactful science. Very important and impactful work not only for neurosurgery but for academic research as a whole. @EladLevyMD

Thanks! We focus on costs, so department budgets & CME funds can be modernized above historical $5k. Most non-academics are employed & can’t simply “write it off” as W2 hires. We support research/conferences, but how many conferences/societies = excessive? Quality dilution?.
In this #WINSxResearchMonday, we highlight a recent study showing the high cost of engagement in organized neurosurgery: upwards of $11K annually. As the field grows, how can we weigh the benefits of participation against rising financial demands? @NeurosurgeryCNS

Important work on how frailty impacts brain tumor patients’ ability to recover from major complications. Phenomenal work by the incredible soon to be neurosurgery resident @Joannaroy99 (#match2026).& team members @Stefan_313 @AkshayWarrior2 & seanbhalla. @BowersNsgyLab keep it up.
@NeurosurgeryCNS : Our NSQIP analysis of brain tumor resection patients identified RAI- measured frailty as an independent predictor of failure to rescue. Thank you @bowersbrainsurg for your mentorship and support over the years. Grateful to have worked on this with the team!

Shocking. We r happy w/ the buzz generated by this pub, but it’s fascinating how many academic neurosurgeons have commented on how these costs “aren’t a big deal” because us non-academic surgeons “can just write them off”; but we are overwhelmingly W2 employees! Not an option.
So 2 society memberships, 2 meetings and board certification each year costs $11800. Wow! @NeurosurgeryCNS Costs of Academic Engagement in Organized Neurosurgery in. : Neurosurgery
