I never noticed the word Sophisticated starts with Sophist until thinking about it while reading Plato's Sophist. The word that now has a positive connotation started out more negative.

Episode 267 is up. I cover the Sophist by Plato, a dialogue that I read three times because I had a strong sense I really needed to understand this one. Give it a listen and let me know what I missed. https://t.co/kQ0DAsUFO8

Prepping for tomorrow’s podcast episode about Plato’s Sophist. I battled this one hard, reading three different translations and giving it a lot of thought. I hope that comes through in the episode. It will release early tomorrow morning.

Morning reading: I’m on the 2nd of 3 short stories by Dostoevsky. This one is called “The Meek One” and is about a husband trying to come to grips with the suicide of his wife on the day it has happened. Dostoevsky is so good at the interplay of internal vs external dialogue.

Who had this paperback version of The Hobbit in the 1980s? I remember carrying this around with me in elementary school. I lost that copy and keep hoping I come across one at a used bookstore.

Morning reading. I thought this entire book was White Nights, but it actually consists of three short stories with White Nights as the final one. I finished the first tale this morning called “A Nasty Business.” It was enthralling. It was so devastatingly uncomfortable that

Sunday morning reading: I finished Plato’s Parmenides this morning. It’s quite possibly the most difficult text I’ve ever read. I’m now moving on to a paper called Plato’s Theory of Knowledge that was suggested by a a few people on X. I’m hoping it helps in my preparation for

You know those classic books you've been meaning to read? You can just read them. They are less difficult and more interesting than you think. And if a book is too hard and you don't understand it, you can read it again.

The most pernicious part of Harvard's GradeGate is that it is opposed to lifelong learning. Inflated grades squelch the desire to learn. Unchallenged students, who may have aced high school, will graduate college without the fire required to cultivate the life of the mind.

I’ve enjoyed Aaron Poochigian’s translations of Sappho and Aristophanes, so it was a delight to receive this advanced reader’s copy of Meditations in the mail. It comes out early 2026. @Poochigian
