In light of the "antisemitic" student protests, I thought it would be useful to look at comments that UM Jewish students submitted as part of the 2024 U-M Community Assessment on Anti-Palestinian Bias and Islamophobia (fielded in March, prior to all the recent craziness)

When most of the world was either silent and/or complicit in the ongoing genocide, it was these fearless souls that dared to speak up. The selflessness, sincerity, and bravery of these students is truly inspiring.

U-M Palestinian, Arab, & Muslim communities have experienced palpable distress over the last 6 months, partly due to the administration's unequal treatment. To gauge the community's sentiments , we (several U-M Arab/Muslim faculty) fielded an informal survey March 17-21 2/n

Let’s start with Ono. He does not have a tenured position at U-M. The past U-M president (Schlissel) or recent Penn or Harvard presidents who were all let go, subsequently all returned to faculty at their respective institutions, Ono does not have that option. 2/n

But why can the admin not even publicly name, let alone acknowledge, these other groups/peoples or explicitly call out other forms of religious hatred? They must think that these groups are either dispensable or don't warrant protections. 5/n

@RegentHubbard , I would genuinely like to know what you have in mind by "dialogue"? I think we agree that regent meetings are not the right forum. We also agree that communication is needed. There is no dialogue "ongoing" - that's why we find ourselves where we are.

Exactly. The timing is not a coincidence (his written testimony to the farcical Congressional committee is due next month). So @UMichPrezOno gets to add this line to his CV. But he should know better - no amount of succumbing is going to be enough for those predators.

The build up to the Herero-Nama genocide in Namibia, perpetrated by Germany started on 12 January 1904. The absurdity of Germany, on 12 January 2024, rejecting genocide charges against Israel and warning about the “political instrumentalisation of the charge” is not lost on us.
