LLMs get criticized for various spiky flaws but they're often better at DWIM than human-to-human communication.

I decided to stop and talk to the mouse in a friendly, non-threatening tone of voice, explaining that if it cooperated I would set it free. While it didn't exactly walk into the shoe box on its own, it did seem to calm and slow enough that I could scoop it up and set it free.

True story. I once chased a mouse around a room, attempting to humanely catch it in a shoe box to release outside but scurried from one spot to the next way too fast . .
There has been a mouse in the house. I had to set out one of those sticky glue traps overnight. The mouse blindly walks into the glue and gets stuck in it, unable to move, usually dies. After 3 days I wake up this morning and the mouse was stuck in the sticky trap. The mouse was.

I rarely interact with this research field nowadays but I think the basic intuitions from studying it are useful for everyone. I remember liking the Hernan and Robins book even though it's not targeted at an ML audience:
Finally, a good modern book on causality for ML: by @eliasbareinboim. This looks like a worthy successor to the ground breaking book by @yudapearl which I read in grad school. (h/t @JoshuaSafyan for the ref).
