This mostly boils down to locus of control. When assigning responsibility for one's circumstances, the right looks from the inside out and the left from the outside in, and the former is markedly better for both improving one's circumstances and for one's overall mental health.

One ironic dynamic I think is at play here: We were all told while growing up that open-mindedness is a virtue. The NPCs teaching us this generally meant it as a euphemism for leftism, but many young men took it literally and wound up rejecting much of what they were taught.
