Isolated in just 3 years! (Much faster than the 12 years in our previous study). We cultured two strains from 'Hodarcaheales', proposed to be closest to our archaeal ancestors. https://t.co/BrLYpiAht0

Eukaryotes are theorized to have originated from an archaeal phylum Promethearchaeota (formerly ‘Asgard’ archaea)[1][1],[2][2]. The first cultured representatives revealed valuable insight[3][3],[4...

These putative hyperthermophilic archaea possess unique genomic features and have evolved thorough genome reduction, suggesting they may have a symbiotic lifestyle.

We carefully investigated the phylogenetic placement and metabolic evolution of Panguiarchaeum (prev. classified within Korarchaeia), and found that they are Asgard archaea.

In collaboration with Deem Team @DEEMteam_Orsay, we uncovered the complex interactions between haloarchaea, nanohaloarchaea, and their respective viruses and virus satellites in salt lakes. See 🧵 #DPANN #archaealViruses #Satellite https://t.co/11QgpMgBXk

Move over, Norse Gods – Marvel at new Asgard archaea named instead (@luisarchaeota) for the Puerto Rican goddess of the soil, Atabeya. Atabeyarchaeia is a new member of the lineage now widely believed to have given rise to eukaryotes – that is fungi, algae, trees and us.
