Absolutely extraordinary paper by RAND, the main think tank of the US military-industrial complex, and another key sign that the U.S. deep state - despite all the chaos and noise - is shifting away from deterring China, towards accepting coexistence (it's literally what they

While Ms. Rand is having herself a moment, I'm pleased to say that my friend Hollis Robbins very presciently wrote an essay last year which I'll be publishing in an anthology (which I am the editor of) for CUA Press early next year. See her tweet below for a link to her

Here, @g_h_rossman is right that AI "is a boon to those with the motivation & background to cultivate knowledge" & that "it spells total destruction" for higher ed as it is. The answer, however, is not blue books but faculty expertise. @compactmag_

This is one of the best reviews I have read of @danwwang 's bestseller "Breakneck" Many reviews have focused on the speed and scale of construction in China vs. the US, but very few have focused on the real human cost of the policies like "One Child". As a dad, this seemed like

My review of the excellent *Breakneck* by @danwwang. It's the book of the year for so many reasons. I focus on Dan's ability to offer a bird's eye view and talk about facts on the ground.

Many great things about the @rootsofprogress conference this weekend, but I want to take a moment to give a shout out to excellent execution of an oft-overlooked event items that most planners and organizers get wrong: the name badge.

Years ago a geneticist explained to me that humans evolved to spend months if not years underground, mostly bored and depressed. How else could we have survived intolerable climate conditions. Best not to see the pandemic as abnormal but what we're adapted for.

Maybe a very prosaic observation, but I've been reflecting on just how much the pandemic changed the world in ways that are completely unrelated to the pandemic itself. I think I've underestimated it 'till now. In a recent interview, I was struck by the comment that so many of

Here's the handy chart. Institutions with a strong brand identity do better than others, whether Hillsdale, Claremont McKenna, Princeton, or Johns Hopkins. No clear brand identify? You'll find them near the bottom.

Fascinating piece in @thecrimson on how universities might better be ranked: Has your institution helped you become more wise? More just? Equipped you to positively change the world? Nobody paying attention will be surprised who is near the top ...
