Important post today from my @thefireorg colleague @rshibley about the how the feds' new theory of "cumulative harassment" — currently being wielded against pro-Palestinian speech — clamps down on free expression and puts colleges in an impossible position: Censor or else.

In @NRO, I draw a distinction between the civil rights violation that was UCLA tolerating a blockade on the quad during spring 2024 midterms and the 1A/academic freedom issue of tolerating odious speech that creates a hostile environment.

I keep saying to my colleagues, we will be the first generation of academics to retire as soon as we are allowed to, and this is the reason.

Contrary to the replies, split ballot design is a completely legitimate survey methodology. Here it is compared to the simpler wording.

If you’re curious how the influencer media pay-op works on the right, here’s a short explainer:. Coca Cola never actually writes a check to Ian Miles Cheong. First the Coke money is laundered to a libertarian or “pro capitalism” think tank as a “donation.” . Then a PR person for

eg, Colburg had only a single bishop (Reinhernus, 1000-1017) which reminds me of a university interdisciplinary unit that doesn't survive the one faculty member whose slightly crankish vision it was.

Series Episcoporum has a section in Germany for "episcopatus, qui brevissimo tempore existerunt." Now wondering if this was a distinctive pattern of German church history or if it's just a data thing that Pius Bonifacius Gams had better access to archives in Germany.

Things I have heard mentioned but which I think explain little or none of the overall trend:. * not enough diversity (eg, Oscarssowhite).* too woke / obsessed with diversity.* TMZ and other awards shows demystifying celebrity.

* Cord-cutting. For many years the Oscars were only available on ABC, which meant many households had no way to watch them. This year, they finally started streaming on Hulu so that may help.

* Oscar bait capture -- in the 1990s, Oscar marketing developed as a strategy for small budget films and since 2005 or so, most nominees for the major awards categories have had utterly trivial box office. Last year's Barbenheimer awards were an exception and 2024 ratings went up.

* audience fragmentation -- ratings for everything except sports are down compared to the era when we only had 3 or 4 broadcast networks.

As someone who has studied how the public cares about Oscar nominations but doesn't like Oscar bait, my guesses as to why Oscar ratings are less than half what they were in the Billy Crystal era. 🧵.
