Today someone asked me why I was wearing a mask. Was I just worried about a new variant? Was I vaccinated? He was shocked when I told him that:
-60 percent of Americans dying from covid are vaccinated
-it's the 3rd leading cause of death across age groups
-covid never went away
Jfc
@united
, the air quality on this flight is horrifying and one, maybe two other people on this full flight of 170 people are wearing a mask. A reading like this means air is not circulating. CO2 itself at these levels are unhealthy, not to mention viruses being breathed out.
Then I asked what he did.
He's a family doctor -- semi-retired.
I can not express how sad and furious I feel thinking about this. Wake up, folks. You have been fucked with. Doctors do not know their shit. I'm so tired of those pretending they do -- especially fellow journalists.
-265,000 in the US died from covid last year
-we're undercounting infections, deaths, and long covid by A LOT
I told him I'm a journalist and the public has been misinformed by the government for political reasons and the press has largely been an agent of those political lies.
-5 to 20 percent of infections cause long covid and there is no cure
-it can affect every organ of the body
-it's not the flu or a cold
-risk increases with reinfection
-vaccine efficacy wears off and the vast majority of people haven't had a shot recently
If you feel shame, good. You should. But being ashamed of what you've done doesn't mean it's too late to change. Wear a mask. Educate yourself, then others. Report on policy solutions and the lack of them. Agitate for clean air in your communities. Use tests to prevent spread.
He told me how surprised he was to hear all that and shared that he doesn't like wearing a mask -- that it feels like showering with your clothes on. I told him I understood, and I definitely do not enjoy wearing a mask either. I do it to protect others and to protect myself.
I was laid off today w/ the rest of our
@MorePerfect
team. More later but:
1) We made some incredible work. For example, our episodes on viability upended how many listeners think about abortion & law.
@gabrielleberbey
@LennyJawton
@librarythingtim
My risk profile is certainly lower than some but every covid infection is russian roulette. None of us know how it will affect us. And as you suggest, I do it for others. Organized abandonment does not align with my values, so every transmission I can help stop is worth it to me.
I'm sorry - I've been trying to temper my outward anger about Covid mitigations to appease folks who aren't there with us yet.
But FUCK the CDC. I'm so pissed.
As North Carolina moves forward with its plan to ban masks, the CDC is silent. It's just the latest betrayal from an admin that has purposely pushed the Overton Window on masks to the far right to excuse its never-ending mass infection policy.
Hello world!
I am thrilled to share that I have a new job at
@WBEZ
producing local news, covering all things Chicago. I am so excited for this opportunity and so grateful to my colleagues at
@NPR
for teaching me what I know. It’s been a wild ride. I can’t wait for what’s next.
PEOPLE!
Last year,
@NPR
let me create a series about a topic little-discussed on the radio: DATING.
This year, they're letting me take it one step further: Let's talk about SEX.
Want to be part of it? Tell us thoughts here:
This is probably the fifth email I’ve gotten from the automated system at
@NPR
warning me that I never submitted my goals for this year and every time I get it, I chuckle
@tjl660
@someone6825
ha I feel that. Personally, I will always try to respond if someone is genuinely asking me about wearing a mask. I don't expect it to change anything for him immediately, but maybe it'll be a seed of doubt that leads him to find out more.
"If the evidence bears out, then long COVID and prodromal Parkinson's could be the same side of the same coin. To be blunt, this means that long COVID patients may actually be miscategorized early-stage Parkinson's patients."
Tell me again you just can't seem to care.
A fun thing about living at the end of the Brown Line in Chicago is you get to join a horde of people every day running to catch the train, with a guy on the platform yelling at you all in a thick Chicago accent: “Go! Get on! Everyone In! Go Go Go!” Almost as effective as coffee.
The union is being careful about what we say publicly rn about New York Public Radio’s announcement, but I can say for myself that I feel like crying and throwing up from seeing this play out the past couple days. I am grateful to my
@NYPR_Union
colleagues helping fight this.
I may have pulled a full Roman Roy accidentally and had a little crying breakdown at our union meeting at the end of the day. But slashing this show when Supreme Court reporting could not be more important is such a waste of potential and a disservice to listeners.
4) Having been in layoff crisis managment mode on the union side for 2 weeks, I'm not surprised this happened.
I pre-grieved.
I'm ok now, but will need support in the coming weeks. Looking for jobs.... outside journalism!? Reach out if you have ideas or want to connect.💫
For our dating series on
@MorningEdition
last year, we reported a story about a woman who, fed up with apps, hired a matchmaking company. We followed her on a date and recorded the whole thing. Today, she emailed us to say they just got engaged!

NEW YEAR NEWS: After nearly 3 yrs at
@MorningEdition
, I'm starting a new gig at
@npratc
. I'll be producing breaking evening news & working on fun field/daily/music stuff in between. It's been such an honor learning from & growing with Team ME. I can't WAIT to be part of Team ATC!
Here is a presentation I gave to company reps this morning about why layoffs are not strategic long-term thinking. Anyone can feel free to copy it if you need to!
Despite New York Public radio's announcement that it is planning to lay off 12% of staff next week, the NYPR union is still fighting to save the jobs of as many valued colleagues as possible.
Layoffs are not the only -- or smartest -- way to handle financial shortfalls. THREAD
3) The people on our team are effing talented. We're insisting the company let us take unfinished work with us. Please reach out if you're interested in publishing our in-depth narrative reporting on the Supreme Court and I'll connect you with my colleagues.

The other day
@arishapiro
and I got a silly idea to try out a bunch of DC’s e-scooters and dockless bikes and make it into radio. Turns out it’s a story full of tension between booming tech companies and cities struggling to keep up
@detach_it
@united
This was on the ground before takeoff and it thankfully went way down when we finally took off. It was between 1790-2000 during the flight. We’re back on the ground again and it’s at 2400.
The thing that struck me most in my interview with
@PhizLair
was that when she listens back to "Exile in Guyville" -- hailed for its bawdy defiance -- she "hears the loneliness... the uncertainty." Me, too.
2) I'm so proud of my work work the
@NYPR_Union
. I helped lead an organizing effort earlier this year to get a bunch of positions covered by
@sagaftra
. I've also been on the bargaining committee for a new contract.
And I went TO THE MAT FOR US on the layoff negotiating committee.
@matneyx
@EncephaloME
Absolutely. But having had a vaccine at some point in the past (that most likely no longer offers strong protection) isn't a good reason to me not to mask. And I felt like that was this person's suggestion: that if I got a vaccine at sometime, I need not be wearing a mask.
#WhyIDidntReport
Because he has more power than me.
Because it would hurt my career.
Because it likely wouldn't hurt his.
Because ppl don't believe the survivor when the accused is someone they like.
Because I didn't want public scrutiny.
Because I don't owe anyone anything.
How the fuck was everyone somehow convinced that the collective trauma experienced over the past 3+ years was due to remote work and masking and not, y'know, being abandoned to mass death and disablement in the name of unprecedented capital accumulation by the ultrawealthy?
Just followed the
@HydeParkHerald
for my *new job* at
@WBEZ
and got a fuzzy feeling about it cause I grew up in Hyde Park and that was the first paper I ever knew. Can't wait to cover Chicago.
I poured my heart and soul into this piece. It was a privilege to report it with
@ailsachang
. Thank you to everyone who made it possible. We are so grateful to tell this story.
LGBTQ students in this Michigan town have found themselves at the center of debate. Their school district has removed any mention of sexual and gender identities in school materials — including its anti-bullying campaign.

Today I had to withdraw my application to one of my favorite shows because I need to stay in Chicago for at least the next year to take care of my dad and it was the right thing to do but it sucked.
That said, *I’m looking for remote producing and editing work!* Send me things!
I’m usually very anti-public grieving - or at least online grieving - when it comes to myself, but my dad had a stroke today and it was one of the scariest days of my life, so I’m just here to say tell your people you love them. That’s all.
I remember meeting him once when I was intern and feeling like I'd just met a character out of my favorite book. We sat on the terrace and talked about the Cubs, how much he loved Italian villas, and what his life was like before becoming Official Judge at Wait Wait.
Today — on the day of our “Let’s Talk About Sex”
@NPR
series launch — I walked into the office to find champagne and a card that made me cry from the best colleagues around. Thank u

It's a joke among audio producers that we have to constantly explain to outsiders what it is that we do. What's actually crappy though is feeling like you have to justify your job to people within your own industry.
I’m moving into an apartment on my own for the first time and one of the things I’m gonna miss most about not having roommates is getting updates on Cleo while I’m at work. Gonna have to teach her to take selfies.
So proud of today's episode of

@gabrielleberbey
reported the shit out of it.
Listen; and upend what you thought you knew about Roe, abortion, and the justices who make the rules.
It’s been a weird birthday stuck at the Grand Rapids Airport but it’s hard to mind cause

It's impossible to put into words here what today's ep of

means to me.
But I can tell you it's for all of us who've had an abortion. It's for anyone who's experienced wanted pregnancy. And it's for anyone who's lost a wanted pregnancy.

Radio does not appear in a vacuum. Those people you hear on air or in podcasts have a talented team of people helping them sound amazing every day. (And yes, we are journalists too.)
It has been almost three years since I directed Morning Edition and still, sometimes when I hear a good instrumental I check to see if it’s long enough for a deadroll or :58s break. Old habits die hard.
@RealGayArbys
This is so real. I also think a LOT of people - deserved or not - felt like they already had a lot of hardship to deal with. And they wouldn’t accept another that the government insisted was optional. I don’t know what to make of that, really, though I still think it’s wrong.
I have a folder in my email called "Compliments" where I save any nice things people say to me.
@kevindleahy
&
@lmigaki
told me to make it one time and I highly recommend following these smart people's advice.
lol a “community note” added to this post implies the reading is inaccurate because of altitude. THIS READING WAS BEFORE TAKEOFF ON THE GROUND IN CHICAGO, IL, which is notably flat.

i truly don’t think people who aren’t alone can possibly understand what it’s like to be alone for this long. and we should talk about that more because it’s horrible.
Just accidentally came across an email from 2013 in which I basically beg for my internship back after getting in a massive car accident which meant I couldn’t go back to school, and am once again suddenly and overwhelmingly grateful that I can walk. And that now I work here.
My church just sent out this note urging people to remember:
Those whose lives are at stake.
Those who have no place to go.
Those who've lost their income.
Those who have no medical care.
Those who are hungry, and
Those who are even lonelier now than before this pandemic began.
Thanks to everyone who read my piece about

, and found it helpful. I wanted to share a few thoughts about what's harmful about the false "wokeness" narrative about the place. via
