A crisis is mounting. Afghans who helped the U.S. are being targeted as U.S. troops leave. One man told me the Taliban threatened to kill his family. He tried to get to America, but his visa was denied. “I’ve been deceived by the U.S.,” he said. https://t.co/BWnXbKLiaR

"Every day, you can see an increase in the Taliban's presence," an Afghan who worked with the U.S. tells NPR. "What am I going to do after September? ... Am I going to even be alive by December?"

Before omicron hit, one out-of-state lab pitching free COVID tests won exclusive agreements with schools, cities and counties across Nevada. The tests didn’t work. On one campus, the *FALSE NEGATIVE* rate was 96%. How did a lab with this track record score such agreements? 🧵

War is always so devastating, so unfair. While in Ukraine I thought often of working in Syria, in Iraq, Libya … doing stories on Yemen. The generations of children from these places, from Afghanistan, whose lives were upended by a war brought to them.

Images of the Mariupol theater before bombing show the word "children" written in large white letters in Russian. Hundreds of people had been sheltering there at the time of the strike. Death toll not yet known. Via @Maxar

The BBC is reviving its use of shortwave radio to broadcast in Ukraine and in parts of Russia. The tactic, popularized during World War II, uses frequencies that can travel for long distances and be accessible on portable radios. https://t.co/kAT4fvWUjB

Visited a “cocktail bar” today in Lviv, where young Ukrainians are mass producing Molotov cocktails they plan to send to the frontlines and possibly use themselves if Russia advances westward.

The most stunning thing about all of the people coming into Poland from Ukraine…there are hardly any men. With Martial Law in Ukraine they have to stay behind. So women are juggling bags, babies, strollers and children as they (in some cases) walk into Poland.

Lawrence Brooks, the oldest known living American WWII vet, has died at the age of 112, the National WWII Museum said. He was remembered as "a beloved friend, a man of great faith and had a gentle spirit." https://t.co/M0sgknjXcZ

Lawrence Brooks served in the U.S. Army when the military was still racially segregated. But the Black soldier's deployment to Australia offered a reprieve from the racism of Jim Crow laws at home.
