@MarinerBooks
. Leonard Cohen blew me a kiss one time.
I'm thrilled to have a new essay out in
@JoylandMagazine
today! It's about the painter Berthe Morisot.
Many thanks to
@chayab77
who guided this essay toward what it is.
Being a woman means being too young for everything until suddenly you are too old for everything, with at least ten years in between when you are simultaneously too young AND too old.
As a woman, I feel there are only two medical experiences
"jesus you're dying, why didn't you come in sooner"
and
"why are you wasting our time with this?"
for the same symptoms
So let me see if I've got this right. We belittle and berate women for not having kids, but professionally, financially, and socially punish women who do have them?
Oh yeah as an underemployed writer, I'm totally fine with losing a 90K-person platform built up over thirteen years, when I am otherwise not remotely famous, why do you ask?
Lesser known fact: in Ovid, Medusa was a rape victim, and was transformed by Athena after the goddess of war witnessed her being raped by Poseidon in one of her temples. So. Was her transformation a punishment, or was she being armed?

's comments about people besides women who can get pregnant caused my 72-year-old dad to ask what that meant, and then we had a positive conversation about trans and nonbinary gender identities. Putting these ideas into the public conversation matters.
Don't act like there's not an ideological connection between the men talking about "redistributing sex" because its owed to them and the young men shooting up their schools because a girl they are fixated on has rejected them.
The concept behind 'Believe Women' is not that every woman is always telling the truth. Rather it's an acknowledgement that society has often proceeded from the assumption that women are automatically not credible, and seeks to remedy that. It is a call to begin with credibility.
Outlawing and penalizing pregnancy termination care does two things few people talk about. One, it criminalizes miscarriage, a common occurrence, but it also designates all women as legally pre-pregnant at all times, since medically, pregnancy begins two weeks before conception.
My Covid-19 experience so far:
wk 1: maybe it won't be too bad?
wk 2-4: in and out of hospital, trying to not die
wk 5-7: bedridden at home
wk 8-9: up and down, trying to recover
wk 10: start to resume normal activities, with lingering mild symptoms
After I got out of the hospital, my doctor wrote me a prescription for N95 masks so that the pharmacy would sell them to me. I'm not even well enough to go out yet so it doesn't matter, but don't make any assumptions about people you see out in masks. You don't know.
At some point in your late 30s, or perhaps after 40, you stop feeling like the oldest young person and start feeling like the youngest old person, and it's kind of a nice change.
Kind of shocked by the amount of people who are advocating not tipping. Sorry but you're all monsters/have never worked 12 hours a day on your feet in a restaurant for $80 in tips and no salary while getting disrespected and groped.
I'm so sorry I know this is so irrelevant and probably counterproductive but can we discuss the bangin' denim choices of
@ewarren
circa 1979? I want these jeans.
Not trying to cancel this guy, we're all having a hard time and this is just one second in this family's life. But the article was a lot. Guys, help out your partners with the kids. It's okay if you sleep less, you can do it.
I have a number of art pet peeves, but one of them is that most modern people assume Grant Wood's painting 'American Gothic' depicts a married couple. Look at it! It's a father and daughter. She's too young. So often we don't really see or think about the women depicted in art.
This holiday season, the best way to buy books as gifts, in order:
1 Your local indie bookstore
2 Other local indie bookstore
3 Straight from the publisher's website
4 Barnes&Noble or similar
5 Indiebound, Powells, etc.
6 Find on the street
7 Direct from Satan
8 Amazon
Please tell me your thing that got cancelled that you are sad about, no matter how small.
Even the loss of relatively small things in this still totally sucks.
Soooo, this is interesting. As you know I started this series, Book of the Courtesans. Now Daily Mail has written about it, but not about the fact that I'm the one doing this all new research? I am not just "translating" the entries. This is MY research.
Reminder that anyone running for president is *a politician*, not your mom, your dad, your savior, a saint, a messiah, a preacher or an entertainer. They will have messed up and they will mess up. Pick the best one anyway.
Whatever you think of Hillary Rodham Clinton, a woman who has dedicated her entire adult life to politics for better and worse, this is just extremely sexist.
A couple got on this flight with twin babies and did and said absolutely nothing to "make up for it," as it should be, because we are all adults here and know that babies exist and have to go places too.
Thousands of women all over the world have just had their long-awaited and sometimes last ditch effort IVF treatments cancelled indefinitely.
Just something to consider before you start making presumptions about the easy lives of people who don't have kids right now.
The difference between France and the US as told through a pharmacy visit:
Me: Is this cold medicine for nighttime or daytime?
Pharmacist: You can take it at any time, day or night.
Me: Oh okay.
Pharmacist: But it will make you go to sleep.
Trans women are women. Trans men are men. Non-binary people are non-binary. Gender non-conforming people can be whatever, they don't conform. History tells us we have always been this way. To ignore this causes pain and costs precious lives.
I wrote this response to a college friend on why I support Warren over Sanders for the presidency right now. A few people asked if they could share it, so I'm posting it here.
There are other factors, of course, but this is the heart of it:
Single? Sad. Married? Boring. Ambitious career? Selfish. Stay-at-home mom? Irrelevant. Don't have kids? Pathetic. Have kids? What a dork.
Quiet? Weak. Loud? Scary. Meticulous? Over prepared. Vague? Unqualified.
How long are we going to keep playing this game?
This is Summer's husband, she is ok. She is too sick with Covid-19 to tweet right now, but is getting medical attention and is in stable condition. She says thank you for the well wishes and please stay home.
Roseanne will not be arrested for making a racist remark. However, anyone, including her employer, can choose not to associate with, hire, watch, or give money to her based on her beliefs and personality. There isn't a free speech discussion to be had here. Hate has consequences.
The power of this image is the prevalence of what it depicts, not so much this particular family as individuals. Focusing just on this one guy is really not the point.
I said recently that 90% of that elusive "French girl" look that Americans love to write about is actually universal healthcare, and I mean this literally.
"Female" and "millennial" audiences...so, all women aged about 20 to about 40...are in direct juxtaposition to what's relevant to a "national publication."
The implication here is troubling to say the least.
GOOD NEWS! Yes this is the second time this is happening, but I get to leave hospital today, which is Day 28 of the Covid battle—recovered & now testing negative for the virus.
I'm going back in for another minor preventative heart procedure soon, but for now I'll be at home 🥰

An important point he realized, I think, is this experienced shattered the sad myth he held that more guns could prevent/help these attacks.
You're not special if I block you. I block everyone who annoys me. Everyone. I block people because I see them being annoying to people I don't even know. Zero strikes you're out.

Basically, a woman's life is just like 80+ years of everyone telling you why it's your fault that you can't be taken seriously, ever, and every life choice you make is wrong.
I'm sorry to do this. We are fighting to save my father. He was left without care for days due to a medical system overloaded by Covid patients. Please share or help if you can. I know so many are suffering right now, we're just trying to get through this
Hi, I am out of the hospital and recovering from Covid-19 in Paris. Still very sick and won't be checking messages for a little while, but I'm so grateful for the support. Please be kind, stay safe, and I'll see you when I'm well. 💙💙💙
"Pre-existing condition" is not a thing. It is a propaganda myth.
You pre-exist. It's called being alive.
You are not a car.
You are not a house.
You are not a thing.
You are priceless.
You do not depreciate.
There is no stasis.
There is no life without illness.
There is no one more qualified to be the first woman to lead the CIA than 30+ year CIA veteran Gina Haspel. Any Democrat who claims to support women’s empowerment and our national security but opposes her nomination is a total hypocrite
this owl
standing around like a little man, bidding you a good morrow sir
who said owls could just put pants on and hang out like this with a pipe in their pocket
