In case anyone forgot, if Roe v. Wade is overturned, abortion laws revert to state laws — and Wisconsin is one of eight states that makes abortion a felony, with penalties of up to six years in prison and a fine of up to $10,000.
(The law was written in 1849.)

my parents are visiting from New York and went to take a tour of the Capitol, and I GUESS they found the press room there (how???) and asked everyone if they knew their daughter
i'm screaming, i thought this kind of parental embarrassment was supposed to stop after age 12
ICYMI: Today is my first day with

2020 has been a crazy year. It's also the year I graduated from college, landed an incredible internship and got a real, adult job. I know most people scrolling Twitter won't actually read these but to celebrate making it through the year, here are my favorite stories I wrote:
My latest cover story for the
@CapTimes
: Madison rent prices are soaring at a record pace and residents are feeling the effects ripple through their lives. There aren’t any immediate solutions.

I’m at a contentious public meeting with city staff and residents of Madison’s west side about the West Area Plan draft. Over 150 people, filling up this room with overflow in the hallway.
From
@MayorOfMadison
on the Gableman report:
"It's clear to me that attorney Gableman's report is full of lies and half truths. He just simply doesn't understand how elections are run, how city government works or, frankly, Wisconsin law."
More to come from
@CapTimes
staff.

It’s official: Madison’s District 14 aldermanic race will be decided by a game of chance.
The city clerk has two slips of paper with the candidates names and a member of the Board of Canvassers will pick one from a bag at random.
In 2018 when I worked at the

Thanks to

for finding this clip — it is unequivocally false that the recent zoning changes in the city have “eliminated single family homes.” It loosened some rules.

: In the works for two decades, the town of Madison merges with Madison and Fitchburg
“It’s like a Midwest goodbye...it’s taken 20 years. Now it's like, ‘Holy crap, it's really happening.’”
Fortunately, we have the fantastic addition of
@elmcgroarty
to the
@CapTimes
, whose beat is disinformation. She's an authority on this topic and I imagine will have some great information for all of us.
In the meantime, I'll just leave this here:
I talked to Ebony in my latest story.
Here’s a quote I loved but didn’t make it in the article:
“We’re not gonna see change until police come down here in clothes that look like mine, sit on the lawn with these kids and stop judging them and ask them what they need.”
Meet Ebony. She’s been the last person to leave the Madison downtown protest for several days now. “I’m here to make sure people get home safe.”
Tonight’s protest wrapped up a few minutes ago without incident.
NEW for
@CapTimes
: Madison has recently overhauled zoning for single-family neighborhoods in an attempt to address the city’s perennial housing shortage.
I've spent the past months talking to supporters and opponents about what it means for the future.
It’s official:
@SatyaForMadison
has been re-elected as Madison’s mayor for another four years. She says she just got off the phone with
@reyesformadison
who conceded.

The Dane County Board is discussing a resolution now that urges
@PublicHealthMDC
officials to repeal the mask mandate.
Over 80 people have registered for public comment. Settle in, folks.
President Biden knows how important clean air and fighting climate change are for our community. I was honored and humbled that he chose to lift up our work in Madison when talking to the country's mayors.

In case you were wondering about Madison and Dane County voter turnout compared to other spring elections in the past decade...
Madison reached record-high turnout, with 63% of voters casting ballots. Dane County came close, falling just short of 2016 numbers.
NEW: A Madison couple is starting a house of hospitality for newly arrived asylum seekers just as Wisconsin is seeing a new spike in refugees, and they’re looking for the community’s help.

ICYMI yesterday: Dane County has the highest vaccination rate among the Latino population in the state — and is perhaps leading in the country as well — with 91% of those 12 and older having gotten at least one shot of the COVID vaccine.

I know it can be tempting to read coverage of these events in the NYT when they cover Madison news, and that's ok! But make sure you're also supplementing that with local coverage from reporters on the ground, who have been following these issues in the community.
A judge found the WI Office of Special Counsel, led by Michael Gableman — who's leading the GOP-backed review of WI's 2020 election results — in contempt of court after determining it had not complied with a previous court order.

Madison's air quality is the worst it's been in decades, reaching "very unhealthy" levels in parts of the city. The AQI was 274 this morning, according to the EPA.
Everyone should avoid physical activity outdoors, and vulnerable groups should stay indoors as much as possible.
