We also asked the governors’ offices of Georgia and South Carolina for internal communications and external communications with the White House, DHS, and ICE. The states were reportedly considering creating similar facilities.

We filed public records requests with the Florida governor’s office and other agencies for internal communications; external communications with DHS, ICE, and the White House; cost records; and facility inspection reports.

To investigate, we asked DHS, ICE, the National Guard Bureau, and the Florida National Guard for communications, cost records, and facility inspection reports related to the Everglades detention facility.

This strategy paves the way for potential conflicts of interest for administration officials who have ties to private prisons. Two of the companies hired to build the Everglades facility had made significant campaign contributions to DeSantis and Trump.

So the administration has turned to local and state governments, private industry, and the use of military bases to attempt to fulfill its anti-immigrant ambitions. But the lack of oversight at these facilities opens the door for mistreatment and worsening conditions.
