To try to postpone trial in his federal election interference case until after the election, Trump’s legal team appealed a ruling that he's not entitled to immunity from criminal prosecution.
Now the trial is on hold. Here’s why it shouldn’t be. THREAD
It's clear why Mike Pompeo has refused to release this information to Congress.
It reveals a clear paper trail from Rudy Giuliani to the Oval Office to Secretary Pompeo to facilitate Giuliani’s smear campaign against a U.S. ambassador.
Emails we obtained, reported on by
@politico
, suggest that Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis is in regular contact with Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas.
In a June 2021, Ginni Thomas said DeSantis should be familiar with her because “my husband has been in contact with him[.]”
BREAKING: Two minutes before midnight, OMB released 192 pages of Ukraine-related records to American Oversight, including emails that have not been previously released.
We lined up the newly released Parnas messages with the records we obtained from the State Department through FOIA litigation, as well as other records and reports.
The timeline is troubling. (Thread)
We obtained the fake "electoral certificates" submitted to Congress by Trump supporters in seven states as part of the failed attempt to overturn the results of the 2020 election.
See the files here:
AT&T Exec Bob Quinn just retired this morning following the Cohen payments scandal. Documents we uncovered show Quinn had a private dinner with Trump FCC Chair Ajit Pai just one month after AT&T hired Cohen. We are demanding answers.
NEW: Jeff Sessions caved to Trump's authoritarian demands. We obtained the signed directive from Sessions to a federal prosecutor ordering a wide-ranging investigation of Hillary Clinton.
We obtained emails between top Trump administration DHS officials and Ginni Thomas, a conservative activist and wife of the Supreme Court justice.
The emails show Thomas sharing election conspiracies in the days before the 2020 election.
Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner regularly requested to fly on Air Force planes even when their presence was unnecessary or inappropriate. We're suing to find out more:
We obtained nearly 400 pages of Mike Pompeo’s personal emails from his time as CIA director.
These records reveal a problematic amount of official business conducted over private email and show Pompeo fielding questionable investigation requests.
NEW: We obtained emails between top Trump administration DHS officials and Ginni Thomas, a conservative activist and wife of the Supreme Court justice.
The emails show Thomas sharing election conspiracies in the days before the 2020 election.
On July 4, 2017, North Korea test-launched ICBMs. That same day, then-UN Ambassador Nikki Haley sent multiple emails with classified information over an unclassified system.
BREAKING: An Arizona judge has ordered the Arizona Senate to immediately produce records in response to our requests for documents related to the partisan “audit” of the 2020 election results in Maricopa County. Transparency is coming.
NEW: Through
#FOIA
, we obtained nearly 10,000 pages of
#USPS
documents, reports the
@washingtonpost
.
The documents reveal a scrapped plan to send masks to Americans, a standoff with Amazon, and more.
ICYMI: We obtained an email that shows the continued efforts by White House staff to pressure Georgia officials to overturn the 2020 election results. An aide to then Chief of Staff Mark Meadows contacted Georgia’s deputy secretary of state on Dec. 30.
New: Records we obtained show an aide to then Chief of Staff Mark Meadows contacted Georgia’s Deputy Sec. of State Jordan Fuchs on Dec. 30 as the Trump White House was pressuring Georgia to illegally overturn the election result.
New: Records we obtained show an aide to then Chief of Staff Mark Meadows contacted Georgia’s Deputy Sec. of State Jordan Fuchs on Dec. 30 as the Trump White House was pressuring Georgia to illegally overturn the election result.
BREAKING: The Superior Court of Maricopa County rejected the Arizona Senate’s blanket claim that legislative privilege allows it to withhold most substantive records relating to the partisan “audit” of Maricopa County ballots. This is a big win for transparency.
Ginni Thomas has recently faced increased scrutiny about her ties to conservative groups while her husband serves on the Supreme Court. These records raise further questions about the connections between Clarence & Ginni Thomas & conservative politicians.
Trump continues to find new and creative ways to profit off the presidency. When the Republican Senate held their annual retreat at the Trump International Hotel this week, rates for rooms were nearly 3x the price — according to a report by

NEW: A court filing tonight suggests the Durham investigation has closed.
The DOJ just dropped a key objection to the release of over 4,500 pages of records related to the Trump-era investigation into the origins of the Trump-Russia inquiry.
We asked the Postal Service for any costs of renovations to Postmaster General Louis DeJoy’s office suites.
Last year, USPS sent us documents — but every single thing related to renovation costs was redacted.
Today we requested an expedited release of records on Mike Pompeo's conduct as secretary of state, including whistleblower complaints that directly involve him.
We obtained emails between top Trump administration DHS officials and Ginni Thomas, a conservative activist and wife of the Supreme Court justice.
The emails show Thomas sharing election conspiracies in the days before the 2020 election.
NEW: We just received DOD records relating to the Trump administration's withholding of aid to Ukraine -- including an email from Secretary Esper asking about the funding.
The volume of material released tonight highlights just how much the administration has hidden from Congress and the American public.
Our statement from American Oversight's executive director
@AREvers
You don't exactly "forget" about a signed directive to investigate Hillary Clinton. We’re concerned that DOJ's previous denial of this letter's existence looks a lot like a deliberate attempt to conceal how far they went to implement President Trump's authoritarian demands.
Ginni Thomas worked with the DeSantis administration to have him talk to a conservative groups, including people associated with Judicial Watch. She wanted DeSantis to talk to “conservative patriots.”
We obtained records showing a senior DOJ official’s handwritten notes on an email rejecting Trump loyalist Jeffrey Clark’s scheme to falsely tell state officials that DOJ was investigating “significant concerns” that could change 2020 election results.
The files released tonight include emails sent by OMB Acting Director Russell Vought and Assoc Director for National Security Michael Duffey — two key players in the withholding of Ukraine aid — in on the morning of President Trump’s July 25 call with President Zelensky.
More Ukraine documents are coming. The next production deadlines in our
#FOIA
litigation are:
- Jan 21: OMB
- Jan 28: Energy
- Feb 4: Energy
- Feb 10: State
- Feb 21: State
- March 16: Energy
Track the whole investigation here:
This is why we're working so hard to extract the paper trail of the Trump administration's Ukraine dealings.
We have six active lawsuits seeking documents, and more files are scheduled to be released in the coming weeks.
Follow our investigation here:
We did.
We also read the emails, calendars, phone logs, and letters — more than a hundred pages of records that the administration tried to conceal.
And it doesn't look good.
We obtained emails between top Trump administration DHS officials and Ginni Thomas, a conservative activist and wife of the Supreme Court justice.
The emails show Thomas sharing election conspiracies in the days before the 2020 election.
Here's the email from Matthew Whitaker to prosecutor John Huber, attaching Sessions' directive to investigate issues related to Clinton. DOJ had filed a sworn statement that officials - including Whitaker and Huber - claimed no written directives existed.
This document, Sessions’ signed order to implement Trump's authoritarian call to investigate Clinton, has not been made public until now. DOJ claimed it did not exist. Our statement:
We’re suing Texas Gov. Greg Abbott and AG Ken Paxton for records that include communications with the NRA and other pro-gun advocacy groups following the May 2022 massacre in Uvalde.
A new report says the parents of 545 children separated at the border can’t be found.
We obtained a January 2018 memo from DHS highlighting problems with the early “pilot” family-separation program.
One “negative impact” listed: “New populations of U.S. orphans.”
We've filed six lawsuits against the Trump administration for Ukraine-related records — including many records the administration refused to turn over to House investigators in the impeachment inquiry.
Now we're expecting a production of Ukraine-related files from OMB tonight.
BREAKING: "Final decision rests with POTUS."
New Ukraine emails released to American Oversight tonight reveal that Pompeo, Esper, and Bolton agreed Ukraine security assistance should "continue as planned."
Meanwhile in Switzerland… U.S. taxpayers paid $34,000 to rent vehicles to shuttle the president’s daughter around Davos for the World Economic Forum. Nepotism in the White House may seem like old news, but the costs are very real.
Since leaving the Trump administration, Jared Kushner and Steve Mnuchin have secured billions in investments from members of the Saudi Arabian government.
We’re suing for records related to their trips to the Middle East in late 2020 and early 2020.
Even though President Trump's allies in the Senate voted against subpoenas, more Ukraine documents are coming.
The next production in our FOIA litigation is due next Tuesday, January 28, from the Department of Energy.
Today is the deadline for the State Department to produce records in response to our lawsuit seeking a range of documents related to the Trump administration’s dealings with Ukraine.
See our full investigation:
NEW: Arizona court orders the state Senate and Cyber Ninjas to immediately release documents related to the Senate’s partisan “audit” of 2020 presidential election ballots cast in Maricopa County, in response to our lawsuit.
NEW: We obtained top Justice Department officials’ call logs from Jan. 6, the day of the deadly insurrection at the U.S. Capitol. The logs show frequent calls throughout the day, including calls with the White House, the Defense Department, and Congress.
The emails show a flurry of activity in late June 2019 immediately after President Trump began asking questions about news reports that discussed military assistance to Ukraine.
NEW: The State Department just released 71 pages of former Ukraine envoy Kurt Volker's calendars and text messages to American Oversight in response to our lawsuit. We've posted the records here, and we will be replying with updates as we review the files:
NEW LAWSUIT: We sued the Central Intelligence Agency and the State Department for failing to release records related to the Trump administration’s controversial efforts to share nuclear technology with Saudi Arabia.
Appointees have 30 days to file their financial disclosures once assuming the position. Whitaker has been working at DOJ since October 2017 and there's no way to tell if he has financial conflicts:
A year after our FOIA, DOJ told the court under penalty of perjury that no records of written directives to Huber existed. Then during Matthew Whitaker's last week at DOJ, they suddenly found the signed directive--in Whitaker’s email.
BREAKING: The Arizona Supreme Court has denied a petition from the Arizona Senate, leaving in place two lower court rulings that records in the physical custody of “audit” election contractor Cyber Ninjas are public records and must be released.
Mike Pompeo and the State Department are simultaneously pledging to rush the release of Clinton emails before the election, while delaying the release of records of taxpayer funded spending at Trump properties until after.
Despite the redactions, when placed against the publicly-known timeline of the Ukraine events, these emails show top DOD and OMB officials taking personal interest in the aid suspension issue at key moments.
BREAKING: In our lawsuit this morning, a Wisconsin judge ruled that the Wisconsin Assembly’s Office of Special Counsel, headed by Michael Gableman, is in contempt of court regarding the failure to release public records in violation of a court order.
It's not just Ukraine. We uncovered emails showing Trump's former UN ambassador Nikki Haley sent classified information over an unclassified email system.
The topic: North Korea's July 2017 missile test.
This is a big deal: Former Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao misused her office – including to support her family's shipping business — an internal watchdog report found. The Trump Justice Department chose not to pursue the a criminal investigation.
NEW: The Department of Energy just released 139 pages of records to American Oversight in response to our FOIA lawsuit — including what appears to be Secretary Rick Perry's briefing book for his May 2019 delegation to Ukraine.
NEW LAWSUIT: We’re suing Treasury and the U.S. International Development Finance Corporation for records related to Jared Kushner and former Treasury Sec. Steven Mnuchin’s late 2020 and early 2021 trips to the Middle East.
We've filed new FOIAs with USPS, NARA, and CIA this afternoon to find out exactly who approved releasing the SF-86 of a congressional candidate. If Trump administration political officials intervened, we intend to find out.
The Durham investigation remains an alarming example of former President Trump’s politicization of the DOJ. Tasked by former AG Bill Barr with proving Trump’s allegations of a “deep state” plot against him – and given nearly four years to do so – Durham came up empty.
BREAKING: A Wisc. court has now issued a written decision and order that the state Assembly’s Office of Special Counsel — which is conducting a partisan review of the 2020 election — is in contempt.
All of this calls into question Secretary of State Mike Pompeo’s knowledge of the events unfolding in Kyiv surrounding the U.S. ambassador and her eventual ouster.
After leaving the Trump administration, Jared Kushner and Steve Mnuchin secured billions in investments from Middle East nations.
We obtained travel records related to their trips to Persian Gulf states during the final weeks of the admin.
#FoiaFriday
In 2020, we obtained the resumes of staffers who joined the Office of the Postmaster General shortly after Trump donor Louis DeJoy took over.
We discovered 4 of those early hires had previously worked for DeJoy’s businesses.
NEW Ukraine Documents: Tonight, less than a day before the Senate impeachment vote, the Department of Energy released 41 more pages of Ukraine-related records to American Oversight in response to our FOIA lawsuit. We'll be posting updates here:
In November 2017, DOJ announced it had assigned senior prosecutors to look into issues raised by House Republicans, who had been demanding the appointment of a 2nd special counsel to investigate Clinton. We filed FOIAs and a lawsuit to uncover the facts.
Arizona sham "audit" contractor Cyber Ninjas has been ordered to pay $50,000 a day, starting tomorrow, as long as it continues failing to comply with court orders to turn over documents in the lawsuit brought by the Arizona Republic.
This gets even more concerning when you add in the records and reports showing contacts with Rep. Devin Nunes regarding investigations of the Bidens. According to CNBC, Nunes’ staff were in contact with Parnas and Ukrainian officials in “late March.”
Andrew Ferguson, Virginia’s solicitor general, previously clerked for Justice Clarence Thomas.
We asked the Virginia AG’s office for Ferguson’s communications with Clarence and Ginni Thomas — and the office told us it is withholding one record responsive to our request.
March 24: Donald Trump Jr tweets about Yovanovitch at 12:12pm EDT
About 20 minutes later, at 4:34pm UTC, Parnas sends Hyde the same article that Don Jr tweeted.
We obtained emails regarding a June 23, 2021, lunch that included Gov. DeSantis, Justice Clarence Thomas, & four clerks.
Previously, we obtained an email from that same month in which Ginni Thomas said her husband had recently been in touch with DeSantis.
NEW: We obtained whistleblower complaints from the Dept. of Defense’s Office of the Inspector General that show federal employees reported coworkers they believed participated in the Jan. 6 insurrection and preceding rallies.
It's also notable what isn't here: State did not produce a formal directive recalling Yovanovitch or a formal readout of Trump's July 25 call with Zelensky.
Both of those were covered by the court's production order, and their absence raises questions.
We FOIA’d Postmaster General DeJoy’s calendars to investigate the undermining of
#USPS
.
USPS rejected our
#FOIA
, saying the “calendar maintained on a USPS computer” was for DeJoy's personal use and the entries ”are not agency records subject to the FOIA.”
We’re appealing.

’s claim that he’ll be announcing “fake news” awards, here are the American Oversight awards for the most corrupt and dishonest members of the Trump administration:
Many of the messages between Parnas and Robert Hyde, a Trump donor who was apparently assisting Parnas in Ukraine, were sent in late March 2019 — dates when Giuliani was in touch with Sec. of State Mike Pompeo, according to records we obtained.
On Tuesday, the House released new evidence provided by Lev Parnas, an associate of Rudy Giuliani, which included disturbing text messages that suggest the movements of former Ambassador to Ukraine Marie Yovanovitch were being tracked.
There are only five pages in this production—and they're heavily redacted—but like the State Department records we obtained in late November, these records were also not released to Congress during the House impeachment inquiry.
March 25: At that same time, Hyde is messaging Parnas (just after 2:00am the next day Ukraine time, according to the time stamps) suggesting he has Ambassador Yovanovitch under surveillance:
"She's talked to three people. Her phone is off. Computer is off."
We're investigating the sham “audit” in Arizona.
Records we obtained, reported on by
@maddow
, show a group had gone door to door to more than 3,000 homes asking Arizonans about their votes in the 2020 election.
Want to help us uncover even more records the Trump administration would rather keep secret?
If you can, please consider donating here to help us keep investigating and fighting in court to expose the Trump administration's Ukraine dealings and more.
Giuliani has confirmed that he texted about Ukraine with a State Department official. Those text conversations are public records and must be released to the public. We filed a FOIA demanding all of Giuliani's texts with Volker:
Why does this text and date render the hearsay so-called whistleblower useless and not credible? If you get even one reason I might recommend you for Law School. Two and it’s LawReview. Answers later. Watch Laura at 10 pm.
Secretary of State Pompeo failed to recover notes from a meeting between Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin, in violation of the Federal Records Act. Now we're suing:
Without oversight, this is what's happening with the $2 trillion coronavirus bailout: hedge fund managers are claiming relief funds as "small businesses."
Update: We have now filed two FOIAs with DOJ - one seeking the Mueller report and one seeking any communications outside DOJ with copies or summaries of the Mueller report.
More Ukraine documents are coming.
The State Dept. has court-ordered deadlines in early January in response to our other lawsuits.
- Jan 8: An additional 2.5 months of top officials comms with Giuliani or about Ukraine pressure campaign
- Jan 10: Kurt Volker calendars and texts
It's long past time for the American people to see the full extent of the Durham inquiry’s work and its influences — and we look forward to the release of these records.
