The syllabus for my "Mathematics and AI" course is now online! It covers a mix of AI theory, statistical learning in supervised and unsupervised settings.
@JohnDiesattheEn
I've entered the American healthcare system in 2017 and have had a lot of discussions with folks who were new to the system too. From my experience, the most common mistake that new folks make when entering is to make less than a six-figure salary.
@ginnyhogan_
Once had an American complain to me (a European) that whenever they go to Europe (the only place outside the US that they have been too) they feel like they are treated like a second-class citizen ...
My student told me that she couldn't complete a proof eventhough she tried for several days, and now she feels like she can't do math. I told her that feeling like you can't do math is what doing math feels like most of the time.
@katiedimartin
I tried playing poker a few times in undergrad. Didn't know and didn't care about the statistics behind it, was thus extremely unpredictable, kept winning, and kept hearing from other players (all men) that I didn't know how to play the game right
If you (like me) are a scientist who has never worked on epidemic modelling before 2020 you can (like me) make an important positive contribution to the current efforts on modelling

by simply not publishing your 1-week-in-the-making single-author preprint on that topic
Pumped to share that "Network inference via process motifs for lagged correlation in linear stochastic processes" with Sara Ichinaga and
@bingbrunton
is now on the arXiv! Here's a thread for you on why we've written such a long paper and what's in it 1/11
New paper by Alice Schwarze (
@aliceschwarze
) and me: "Motifs for Processes on Networks":
A key point: For network motifs, don't just think about structure; you should also think about dynamics.
Photos from before and after my

defense. An almost 2-hour grill on "entropy & networks" did derange my
#subfusc
a little but, more importantly, it earned me a doctorate!
@tymwol
Me: I am stuck with pandas
Partner: I work with pandas, I can help
Me: *shows code*
Partner: Ok... Wait, what is this? That's not how that works... Really? Why?? Oh I think I can't help you
Me: Why?
Partner: because your pandas is different from the one that I know
💃💃💃The Women in Network Science seminar is back!!! 💃💃💃 (UPDATED FLYER)
Check the website for details on the amazing line-up of speakers and subscribe to the mailing list for announcements and zoom links!
Now that I have become a centipede with one foot in mathbio, compneuro, dynamical systems, complex systems, network science, data science, machine learning ... there are just too many potentially relevant papers coming out... every hour
Through
@netsci2020
and organizing the WiNS seminar I connected with a lot of women in network science and today I started a list of WiNS twitter accounts. Lmk if you want on/off the list and who else should be on it!
The WiNS seminar is back for the Winter!! Join us for an excellent line-up of speakers every Wed 11am PT/2pm ET! See the webpage () for all details and join the mailing list () to get the zoom links!
It's that season of the year again where I get a lot of requests to recommend women as speakers, panelists, and prize nominees. So let me share a list of simple hacks on how to diversify your academic events. 🧵
I decided to look at some papers that I have pretended to know for a while now, and I just learned that Tibshirani & colleagues write excellent stats papers. If you want to learn about lasso or graphical lasso, don't waste your time on Wikipedia but go straight for the papers
WiNS announcement time! Please RT!
@foucaultwelles
& I are working to formalize the Women in Network Science society’s structure. There are many opportunities for women and nonbinary researchers in network science at all career stages to get involved!
I don't have the charisma, reach, or energy to start "a thing" but I am not too excited to learn that

2023 will be in Tampa, FL and will thus require me to travel for a week in a state that denies access to life-saving reproductive health procedures ...
Successfully turned a bunch of browser tabs with journal articles that I am unlikely to read any time soon into a bunch of downloaded pdfs that I am unlikely to read anytime soon
#academicchatter
The last two weeks, I've been tweeting a lot about opportunities for and examples of women and underrepresented groups giving talks at conferences. Why do I care about this so much? 🧵
I skipped lunch today because I was so tense about the H1B/J1 ban and ready to throw up when the I learned that the text was released. The fact that I am not on the list of the many people whose lives are directly affected by this is only a small solace because
Looking for a good resource to introduce undergrads to network analysis. Kind of like this book (but ideally open access and with less R and more python)
*a least* half of the female STEM faculty are awesome and I want to see more of them in my feed. If you feel the same way check out the women-in-network-science list I made a year ago
Another reminder that attending conferences is often a privilege of those who have the financial means, a "good" passport, no access requirements, and no young, old, or sick family members to care for. Without fixing these problems academia cannot be truly inclusive
This never ends. This year, so far, 15 out of 44 people to attend
@black_in_ai
workshop at
@NeurIPSConf
(which is still in Canada) have been denied visas. That's 33%. We had all this press last year, they were supposed to help us this year.
I wish academics would stop making so many claims and putting such a large emphasis on being the first to work on or publish on something. For one, there is usually more than one way to approach a problem and plenty of room for the many people to make valuable contributions.
Networks are everywhere. Even in bird flocks. (I modelled collective motion as a network and it contributed to the discovery of a new phenomenon). So why are networks everywhere? 1/3
The more time I spent on advising undergrads on how to apply for grad school the more I am convinced that we should burn all university rankings in a deep pit and bury the ashes
🚨🚨🚨 Complex systems researchers! 🚨🚨🚨Are you planning to attend
@JointMath
2022? We are organizing a session on "Mathematics of Complex Systems" and are looking for speakers! All career stages welcome! Nominate yourself by June 2 here:

COMING UP: Last chance for you
@netsci2020
to learn about process motifs (this time for entropy!) and a last chance for my kitty to sabotage me while I'm live! For either, join the session DYNAMICS I at 18:15 CET
Generously giving credit to the prior work in your area does not diminish your contribution. It signals that you don't have the need to drag others because you are confident in your contribution's quality.
@jameshamblin
How quickly he set up the free starlink internet for Ukraine was really impressive. But his greatest achievement will forever be that he ended world hunger with 6B dollars. Unparalleled generosity!
It is 0:30am. I tell my husband that I had a dream the other night about the 4-color theorem. I then explain the 4-color theorem to him. Despite me telling him that it's been proven, he is now fiercely trying to draw a counter example. It is 1am.
@kareem_carr
I think the confounding factor is mountains of family money? You need that to (1) get into Harvard or Stanford without a scholarship and (2) to value the opportunity of getting that degree so low that you just quit halfway through
I just did it. I made a pop culture reference in a meeting with my student and it was awkward and confusing because it referenced to something way before her time. Do I get to be a professor now?
@cntraveller
Searching for a silver lining here ... Since growing a collective environmental consciousness hasn't worked, can we now save the Reef because there is corporate interest in its survival?
Hypergraph contagion (noun)
The phenomenon that if sufficiently many of your researcher friends do research on hypergraphs you too start doing research on hypergraphs
Sent this out to 5th graders for my next
#skypeascientist
& they sent me tough questions back: What is centrality? Why do you research such a complex subject? What do our brains do when we work on math? Do main characters always know everyone in the movie? What's your job like?

is a fantastic way for kids to learn about networks. Big ideas, yet readily understandable by young people. All they need is arithmetic and curiosity.
Had private conversations with several people today who are affected by the ICE announcement. They won't comment on this publicly for fear of further repercussions. If you are in the fortunate position to show outrage without fear please be loud for everyone who can't
I am *very* excited to announce next week's WiNS seminar: On Jan 27 11AM PT,
@alliecmorgan
will present her new work on the gender gap in publication rates. A very relevant topic not just for WiNS but for researchers of all genders and in many disciplines! See you there!
The WiNS seminar is back for the Winter!! Join us for an excellent line-up of speakers every Wed 11am PT/2pm ET! See the webpage () for all details and join the mailing list () to get the zoom links!
Do complex systems exist? Can we tell a complex network from a non-complex one? Can we produce properties of complex networks with an "uncomplex" model? - Happy to have been part of this fun project at
@sfiscience
that critically revisited some of the complex systems folklore.
In a very cool talk, Carina Curto identifies cycles of cycles of cyles (of ...) as the motifs that lead to periodic behaviour in a network with linear threshold dynamics.

Women are excellent researchers, mentors, and mentees! You can see one example each week at the Women in Network Science seminar. Our next speaker,
@justnitika
, will present her research on multilayer social networks of paper wasps next Wed 11am PT!
What types of computations are faster in
@JuliaLanguage
than in Python? I just tried a stochastic simulation (Euler-Maruyama) and found no difference between the two languages
Regular reminder to conference organizers:
Fee waivers/travel assistance will not go to the ones who need them most if people are required to register (and agree to be billed) *before* they can apply for the fee waiver.
Whenever I read an explanation of some code functionality and it involves the word "foo" and "bar", I close the tab immediately and search for a different explanation of that code functionality somewhere else.
Now seems like a good time for the announcement: I ll be starting a postdoc with
@bingbrunton
at the University of Washington! I am looking forward to exciting research on neuronal networks at the intersection of dynamical systems and data science!
After I explained what a postdoc is, the US boarder agent asked what I want to achieve with my research and teaching in the grand scheme of things. I now expect a TT position or at least a prestigious postdoc fellowship to be there to greet me at O'Hare
@julia_m_mac
When someone pays McKinsey 400k for a presentation, they are not paying for a talk. They are just paying for the brand name. It doesn't matter if that presentation follows a 7-step framework or is any good at all. Using that framework is not going to earn me 400k per presentation
Together with
@FranciscaOrtizR
, I am organizing the Women in Network Science (

It might be that my main motivation for wanting to stay in academia is that I made a lot of really good friends with whom I can have great conversations ... and I really just want somebody to pay me to hang out with my friends all day
Good things come to those who wait!
@masonporter
and I updated our preprint on motifs for processes on networks. Updates include a discussion on whether one should count motif contributions *per network* or *per occurrence on a network* and more figures!
