My view? We should have lots of diff news organizations in Canada. But they shouldn’t be able to lie about what they do to get charitable status — avoiding tax means all Canadians are subsidizing this org that took over another org in order to use their Charitable Gift Status.

This new organization’s name? True North News. The Breitbart of Canada. Who is its largest donor? Kas Nejatian, the COO of Shopify, who benefits from not paying any tax on the “donations” he makes to this right-wing news organization. He’s also a board director.

At one point, the organization changed its name and switched to the stated goal of being about "Relief of Poverty”. Canada has strict rules about what is allowed as a charity (and can therefore issue tax receipts to donors). Normal media organizations do not qualify.

There is a charity in Canada whose stated goal was to “welcome immigrants from the United Kingdom to British Columbia.” For those who can’t read between the lines, BC has a racist backlash against growing numbers of Asian immigrants.
