Twitter friends,
My company is closing and I am being laid off. I am looking for a new job opportunity. I have 5 years of business administration exp in a JP/EN bilingual IT/software dev environment. Prefer to stay in Japan but will consider elsewhere. 🔁RTs appreciated!
“Speaking of Mutsumi Inomata, one of my strongest memories is when Michael Jackson, who came to Japan on his BAD tour, fell in love with Inomata's art book at first sight at a bookstore and requested a meeting.”
Big news if you buy stuff from Japan! After almost 3.5 years of closure in the wake of Covid, Japan Post is finally reopening cheap airmail small packet service to the USA, Canada, UK, Germany, and France beginning on Monday, Oct 1st.
An original Yoji Shinkawa sketch of Meryl from Metal Gear Solid was listed and sold today on Mercari for ¥888,888 ($5800 USD). The art board was given away by Famitsu in 1998. The lot also included a Policenauts mousepad autographed by Kojima. The listing sold in under 3 hours.
The Yahoo auction for Battle Choice, an unreleased Konami game from 1988, has ended for ¥2,401,000 (about $15,845 USD). According to Unseen64, this game is undumped & no screenshots existed til now. These are the first screens we have seen, a hybrid fighter and chess-like system.
I was watching Supersize Me with my brother on Sunday and there is a scene where Jared Fogle is giving out his email address to preteen girls and OH MY GOD THIS HAS NOT AGED WELL
Ten years ago this month, I acquired this item: a 1.5 million sales award plaque for Metal Gear Solid, given to Jack Of All Games, which was a major USA software distributor at the time. It remains perhaps one of the nicest items in my collection. (currently in storage.)

A Hard Off in Chiba has pulled from sale a very rare Nintendo DSi model, the McDonalds eCrew Development Program which was issued with employee training software. It seems that McDonalds contacted Hard Off and asked them to stop the sale.
For Final Fantasy VI’s 27th anniversary, Kazuko Shibuya shares the very first version of Tina (Terra) that she produced, with short hair! Document dated June 25, 1993.
Tonight’s “Secret History: Final Fantasy Historia” on NHK showed off some Final Fantasy VII Remake motion capture development footage from Square Enix Visual Works.

Got “Early Works of Final Fantasy VII” book as published April 1996. I only learned of its existence a month ago; surprised I could track down a copy already. It was a supplement to the April 1 1996 issue of Hyper PlayStation magazine.

A former Hudson employee says he saved several Famicom development ROMs from the trash while working there. He put them away and forgot about them. In this video, he tests them: Super Mario Bros., Xevious, Adventure Island, a sound test ROM for Faxanadu, and some that do not boot
Big score! Found a junk GameCube with a Broadband Adapter attached for ¥3300. I bought the set, immediately took out the adapter at the counter, and sold the GC back to Hard Off. Received ¥600 for the buyback. I’m happy with this outcome. #ハードオフファミリー
So, you guys remember my coworker that gave me all the Sega Saturn stuff? Today he said he had a “PlayStation” to give me and this is what he dropped off at work for me just now 😲
It’s nice to have this little gem back in my collection: Metal Gear 1 Special Disc for GameCube that you could only get from the Twin Snakes system bundle. Cost was three times as much as the last time I bought it….
Maybe the best Hard Off find today of many: Jusco limited edition Game Boy Advance in clear orange & black. This matches the rare Jusco N64 which is highly desirable. Sold as junk/not working for ¥300. I will have to diagnose to see if I can resuscitate it. #ハードオフファミリー
Jackpot! 🎰 Big haul of FF7R lottery figures for ¥200 each at Suragaya. I was starting to think I wasn’t going to find these at a good price. No lady Cloud though...
Great portraits and interview with original FF pixel artist

. She confirms something I had suspected — that she’s the only member of FF1’s design team still employed at Square Enix.
I got a ¥500 coin I’ve never seen before from the post office. It was minted in 2007 and commemorates 50 years of Japanese research in the Antarctic. Really thought it was foreign currency for a few seconds.
Finally won an auction for my

most-wanted gaming item: wooden Nintendo Entertainment store sign from the early 90s. These were only given to official Nintendo retail stores who signed a contract and paid royalties to Nintendo. I already have the matching gold Mario statue.

Reminds me of the story I read once on Reddit where PayPal suspended someone’s account for sending money labeled as “For Yakuza” (the videogame...)
In early morning April 3rd, 2023, a 21yo university student broke into the Book Market A Too used video game store in Sanjo City, Niigata, in an attempt to steal, among others, a copy of MR. NUTZ for the Super Famicom, valued at ¥74,800 ($558 USD).
Young me, beginning to learn japanese: Kanji is lame, why don't they write everything in hiragana?
Me now, trying to read a friend's text message all in hiragana: I... I can't read this
In 1980, the same year Dr. Slump debuted as a manga, Akira Toriyama designed an instruction manual for an Aiwa cassette recorder. It is as delightful as you can imagine. Photos courtesy of

Yuji Naka seems to be pleading guilty in his insider trading case. At the first trial held at the Tokyo District Court, Naka stated, "There is no doubt that I learned the facts about the game before it was announced and bought the stock."

Georgia Coffee released some promo Twin Peaks collaboration merchandise in Japan. Sometimes it pops up on Mercari but always sells immediately. I’ve seen posters and coffee cups. I covet both.
PlayStation Magazine (Japan) March 1, 1996. Final Fantasy VII cover; Lots of early beta screenshots. The game was scheduled for a 2-disc December 1996 release at that time.

Everything about this is strange. Colonel Sanders looking dude eating with a tissue stuck up his nose. Why does the kid have a prewritten note? Why the sign on the back? Does he represent the whole company?
This long-established store called Radio Center in Akihabara still uses almost the same design store sign as it did in 1951 (left).

Guess I’ll post it here too 😜
Interesting tho as I have read that Toriyama is a bit of a recluse and doesn’t like being photographed? Even Nobuo Uematsu who worked with him on stuff like Blue Dragon mentioned that they’ve never met face to face.
This chart shows which projects that Square developers transitioned to between the late SNES and early PS1 era. About 40% of the Chrono Trigger staff moved to FF7, and almost half of the Super Mario RPG staff moved to Final Fantasy Tactics.
