Ontario is lowering the age for regular, publicly funded breast cancer screenings from 50 to 40, which Health Minister Sylvia Jones says will help with early detection.

NYGH is participating in #Mammothon! Are you a woman aged 50-74 who hasn't had a mammogram in the past two years? No history of breast cancer? Walk-in or book an appointment at one of our sites starting Sept 30. No doctor referral required! https://t.co/GHSP6WxMDz

Dr Sanfillipo is a wise man. Can’t solve the fam doc deficit (and underuse of other specialists) without proper coordination in the training pipeline. https://t.co/ru8llV48f4

With 12% of women in 🇨🇦 expected to be diagnosed with #breastcancer in their lifetime, having breast cancer screening guidelines that are based on the latest science is essential. We support @cantaskforce expedited review process to release the draft guideline this fall.

Same in 🇨🇦 (and I’d guess most of western world)
One dirty little secret about medicine is that a lot of the barriers to practice (individual state licensure, board cert requirements, facility and insurance credentialing) have significant functions as regulatory hedges to keep competition out and wages high for US doctors.

Easy fix to the paternalism (in ON) - 50+ currently get ‘invited’ to OBSP but don’t need doctor requisition Open up 40+ to self refer to OBSP if they desire screening.
@Garth_Nicholas1 @NightShiftMD @DrPaulaGordon @cantaskforce @JeanSeely As a “patient” and a woman who has had breast cancer I can assure you that most women feel intimidated by the doctor/patient relationship and the mere thought of breast cancer. 1/2

Cigna uses an automated system that allows “medical directors” (doctors employed by @Cigna) to deny a claim in 1.2 seconds without opening the patient’s file. Please read this, share it, and help us (metaphorically) burn these companies to the ground.
Doctors at a major US insurance company deny tens of thousands of claims a month without even looking at patients’ files. “We literally click & submit,” a former Cigna doctor told @ProPublica & @Capitol_Forum. “It takes all of 10 seconds to do 50 at a time.” The inside story 🧵
