ER MD (he/him). Author of four Canadian bestsellers including Nightshift, Power of Kindness and my latest The Power of Teamwork. RTs are not endorsements.
I’ve been an ER physician for four decades. The level of despair and pessimism ER physicians, nurses, RTs and other healthcare providers are talking about right now is unprecedented.
To those who attacked me personally for complaining that my taxi driver wasn't wearing a mask while coughing and sniffling. I'm a frontline ER MD. We wear masks EVERY shift. If I get covid, a colleague will have to work my shift which adds to their stress. Think about that.
I'm going to be off the grid for a while. My sister Joanne passed away peacefully today at 5 pm. Thank you so much for your support and helpful advice. I'm glad her suffering is over.
I’m at my sister’s bedside. We think she contracted
#COVID19
over the weekend. She’s in severe respiratory distress and is on O2 and suction prn. She some hydromorphone and is in no distress. I am prepared for the worst.
I worked the night shift at Sinai Health System last night. Dr. Paul Koblic worked the casino shift from 9 pm to 4 am. I'm old and he's young. He offered to stay all night if necessary to do the intubations so I wouldn't have to risk getting
#COVID19
. I'm crying as I write this.
The world seems a lot less kind these days. I see irritation, impatience and anger everywhere. I know it’s not just me. I can feel it. Like the entire planet’s frontal lobes have been taken off line.
Pharmacies, listen up. DO NOT WASTE A SINGLE DOSE OF THE AZ VACCINE. Explain the risk and obtain informed consent to administer to people under age 55.
BREAKING: 200+ Health workers from across Toronto stand UNITED in protecting access to healthcare for everyone.
Treatment not trucks! Health not honking! Vaccines not vitriol!
Health workers stand united. ✊🏾
My partner has
#COVID19
and I can tell you she’s the sickest she has been in the 26 years we’ve been together. Fortunately she’s on meds. If you want to tell me “it’s no big deal,” I’m not interested.
There is something wrong with the warning from law enforcement to healthcare workers on University Avenue NOT to wear garb that identifies them as such. Is that caution or capitulation? What right do protesters have to force me to hide the work I do?
I’m watching the House of Commons debate on the Emergencies Act. I note the repeatedly-used talking point by the CPC that vaccine mandates have been invoked without scientific evidence.
I am a Jew. I refuse to be silent about
#Antisemitism
. It scares the shit out of me and it’s a blight on society. I will not sit idly by and let others spew hatred without calling it out.
If I were the health minister of a province in which several thousand good RN positions went unfilled, one thing I would do is gather as many departing nurses as I could survey and ask them why they left.
All of this talk of “moving on” from the AstraZeneca
#CovidVaccine
has done a great disservice to the people who got it. There is still time to fix the message to them.
My only sister is in hospital with pneumonia. I’m her caregiver and her most frequent visitor. I hope she recovers, but she’s fragile. This is hitting me hard.
In Canada, there is a staggering tendency by the provinces to underestimate the value of nurses. The repercussions are being felt across all of healthcare.
I'm getting trolled b/c I've said
#CovidIsNotOver
because there's an outbreak on the LTC floor where my sister lives and because I have to step in as a replacement care provider. The irony is that the trolls pretty much have it their way. So, they must be feeling insecure.
At a covid and flu assessment clinic yesterday, I saw a double vaccinated healthcare worker in respiratory distress from
#Omicron
. I sent this individual to the ER.
#Omicron
is not always a mild illness.
As host of
@cbcwhitecoat
, I'm supposed to be neutral. But I'm also an ER MD at a downtown Toronto hospital. I am so angry at the people who think it's okay to harass healthcare workers just outside where they care for sick people. Just stop it before a patient or HCW gets hurt.
I'm feeling a sense of pride hearing Canada's Deputy Prime Minister and the Ministers of Foreign Affairs and Defence -- all capable women -- speaking forcefully about the Canadian government's reaction to Russia's invasion of Ukraine and Canada's response.
It pains me to say this, but it's past time to take NACI recommendations with a grain of salt. For the good of your health, DO NOT be choosy when it comes to
#covidvaccines
. Take the first one you're offered.
I’m finally recovering from my first bout of
#Covid
. Twelve days of fatigue and malaise plus constant cough and coryza. And that’s WITH Paxlovid. I’ve had lots of colds and this was not a cold. Given the prevalence of
#LongCovid
I’m grateful to have returned to baseline.
I just finished 5 ER shifts in 8 days. Patient volumes are way up. Nursing attrition is visible and impactful on every shift. I see a lot of colleagues working hard trying to cope with both...and getting exhausted in the process.
I'm detecting a lot of anger, confusion and uncertainty about the increasingly worrisome details about
#OmicronVarient
. Let's remember we also have masks, rapid tests, vaccines, powerful antiviral medications and lots of kind & hard working people. We'll get through this.
I’m sorry but truck protesters flooding Ottawa’s 9-1-1 emergency system with crank calls is NOT lawful protest but creating a public nuisance with risk of great harm. It’s time to put an end to this.
I’m beyond grateful that my sister who is hospitalized with bilateral pneumonia and urosepsis is receiving excellent care and not going bankrupt in the process.
This morning, my sister looked sick enough to die. She wasn’t being offered fluids because it was deemed too risky due to aspiration. But when offered fluids, she kept opening her mouth. By the end of the day, she was sitting up, recognizing family, looking alert and smiling.
To ride out the
#Omicron
wave: 1. Get 3rd dose as soon as you are eligible. 2. Avoid nonessential indoor crowds. 3. Switch to N95 masks indoors where risk uncertain. 4. Rapid tests before indoor house gatherings. 5. Postpone nonessential travel.
If you've been offered a Moderna
#CovidVaccine
and you're holding out for Pfizer, DON'T. The two vaccines are EQUIVALENT in efficacy and safety. There is no good clinical reason to prefer one over the other.
My sister is terminal with dementia & recurrent aspiration. As her POA & essential family caregiver, I need to have a -ve rapid test EVERY 72 hours. If I get sick, I can’t visit her. I go EVERY day and have never missed a visit b/c I wear masks and take other precautions.
At a time when vaccine and mask mandates are dropping like flies, I'm getting lots of heat from anti-mask and anti-vaccination people who think I should keep my opinions to myself. They must feel threatened by what I have to say that they resort to personal attacks.
Ontario’s Chief Medical Officer may announce ON MONDAY a recommendation that Ontarians resume wearing masks indoors. Am I the only one to find ODD the scheduling of that announcement? Why not announce it now? What will change between now and then?
I'm getting clubbed on Twitter for suggesting that we find a way to have outdoor schooling now that the weather is warm enough to permit it. This is not a personal attack on any individual. I believe it's a collective failure of imagination.
If you have an appointment this week for a
#CovidVaccine
and are tempted to cancel because it's Moderna and not Pfizer, PLEASE DON'T CANCEL. There is no good scientific reason to reject the Moderna vaccine in favour of Pfizer.
The taxi driver who picked me up at the airport in Regina has sniffles, keeps clearing his throat and has coughed. No mask! I have my N95,on and an open window.
We need to vaccinate EVERYONE on Earth. We need to vaccinate EVERYONE on Earth. We need to vaccinate EVERYONE on Earth. We need to vaccinate EVERYONE on Earth. We need to vaccinate EVERYONE on Earth. We need to vaccinate EVERYONE on Earth. We need to vaccinate EVERYONE on Earth.
Truckers have every right to protest in a democratic society. Their opinions on the value of
#CovidVaccines
are entirely irrelevant and valueless. Our society has wasted far too much time on scientifically IGNORANT opinions.
@DrNadiaChaudhri
passed away yesterday evening, having reached the end of her road with ovarian cancer. She leaves behind her Sun and Moon, a loving extended family, colleagues and students, friends around the world, and so many others who have been touched by her & her story 1/n
I'm an MD and I'm
#ReadyToVaccinate
people against
#COVID19
. Just tell me when and where I'll be there. If you're a health professional and want to pitch in, tell us what you do and that you're ready and willing. Please RT TY.
A
#VaccinePassport
that only lets people travel if they get certain vaccines and not others would be A VERY BAD IDEA. If you're vaccinated, you should be permitted to travel full stop regardless of the type of vaccine you received.
The people who have nitpicked at numbers during a healthcare catastrophe either don’t work in healthcare or know no one whose surgery has been postponed by
#Omicron
.
New evidence confirms COVID-19 vaccines are overwhelmingly safe - >38 million vaccine doses administered in Ontario with an incidence of 0.06 per cent adverse effects per Public Health Ontario.
A few weeks ago I called
@KatharineSmart
into question for her use of the term “collapse” because I didn’t look closely enough to see the outlines. I now believe we’re a lot closer to collapse than I realized.
Regarding the AZ blood clot risk in ppl <55 years, why not ASK them if they want the vaccine instead of infantilizing them by not allowing them to have it.
#Covidvaccination
has been shown safe and effective. It saves hospitalizations and saves lives. There is NO smoking gun of untoward severe adverse reactions. There is only noise and false accusations on social media.
When you ridicule a physician or any health professionals who “uses pronouns”, you are ridiculing ALL of them. Our BUSINESS is evolving with the times and demonstrating empathy for our patients and their families.
1. If you're worried
#Omicron
is all around you, wear a mask.
2. If you're worried b/c you can't get data on
#Omicron
, wear a mask.
3. If getting
#Omicron
means you can't go to work, wear a mask.
4. If getting
#Omicron
puts you at greater risk of getting sick/dying, wear a mask.
I’m appalled at the Helter Skelter vaccine rollout that has 80+ year olds waiting patiently for vaccine appointments while much younger people get same day vaccines.
Interesting how the commentariat kept urging the federal government to act. And once the government invoked the Emergencies Act, the commentariat expressed reservations about acting. Funny that.
I’m at Joanne’s bedside. She looks stronger this morning. She’s more awake. The sc fluids overnight helped. She’s got quite the congested cough! We’re listening to Carole King. My rapid test this am was negative. Small mercies.
My God what a nasty country we have become. I'm no fan of our Prime Minister but after two years into a global pandemic, he's not allowed a couple of days of rest in one of the most beautiful places on earth? Sick of this shit.
We need state of the art indoor ventilation and air filtration. And we need public health officials to call for mask mandates and to refuse to bow to political pressure against such mandates.
@DFisman
Shout out to a nurse colleague last evening who treated a young woman in extreme emotional distress with dignity and respect. And in the process saved that woman the stigma and spectacle if physical restraints.
This needs to be said by everyone advocating for kids going back to school: any plan that doesn't address socioeconomic inequities is a non-starter because people who are disadvantaged are at greater risk of contracting and dying of
#COVID19
.
Thank you
#WHO
for throwing pragmatic health professionals under the bus by calling mix and match dangerous. I say show us the evidence of danger or rephrase yourselves
President Biden has trouble remembering the date his son Beau died. Not the day. The date. I have trouble remembering the date my dad died. Want to know why? I did an ER night shift the night before and got zero sleep on the last day of my dad's life. I saw him in hospital at…
Because I wrote the book
#PowerOfKindness
some have used that to accuse me of unkindness towards people opposed to the
#covidvaccines
. This is spurious. Failing to get vaccinated IS UNKIND because it puts self-interest ahead of the good of the community.
If you're fortunate enough to have a family physician providing longitudinal care with no plans to shutter the office, I suggest sending them flowers or buying them a coffee. THEY ARE TRUE HEROES for keeping the faith and the lights on. That's the tweet.
