For years, Pakistan’s establishment has portrayed India as an existential & irreconcilable enemy. It seems that a similar stance is now being adopted towards Afghanistan. Bravado impedes discussion of the dangers. Most countries do not feel comfortable with multiple hot borders.

The best course to address the present stalemate between Pakistan and Afghanistan would be to continue the dialogue, even if it takes 30 rounds. Otherwise, enemies would benefit. Neighbours should never say no to dialogue—it’s a lesson of history.
