It’s definitely a cultural practice not religious. Practiced a lot in Nigeria. When I was 17 my mum hosted a charity gala for it and told me to be cautious because it was highly likely that women in the room had it done.
I remember first hearing about FGM ( Female Genital Mutilation) when I was like 15, and I literally was horrified.
Spoke to my parents about it. For my dad to say, “ yeah, it was something that the Muslim side of our family did. I stopped them from doing it to you.”
