I’m not pissed that the NYT called Stoppard undereducated. I don’t actually care about that. I’m offended by the implication that reading books isn’t education itself. The attempt to divorce reading and education is why students think they’re now just in school for career prep.

I don't disagree with this, but I think another factor is the "no kings" rhetoric appeals to a nostalgic American patriotism that was part of the Boomers' New Left but is unrelatable or even distasteful to young people skeptical of both nationalism and appeals to Founding Fathers
