We envision that this could be the allosteric change postulated by the ‘allosteric model’ of transcription termination, where dimerization would turn Pol II into a termination competent enzyme, incompatible with elongation factors.

Together, we propose that after cleavage and polyadenylation of the mRNA, CPF dephosphorylates Pol II and triggers its dimerization.

Juan quantified the accumulation of Pol II beyond the TES as a ‘Retention Index’, and found that impairment of Pol II dimerization affected 70.5% of the genes being analyzed.
