No joke, I teach this movie in my screenwriting class. Structurally it’s perfect. Every joke has a second shoe. All 8 sequences have clear breaks. How do you not cry at the end?

I’d argue it’s important for us to stop holding opening weekend at such high esteem in regards to it being an accurate metric to judge a film’s success. People just don’t go to the theaters the way they used to. It’s a good indicator of a film’s draw but isnt the end all be all.
gunn's movies tend to have good legs, but you can't tell me WB is happy with a global opening weekend on par with quantumania and captain america 4. we'll see how F4 does in two weeks but superhero fatigue is getting realer and realer!.

Where Man Of Steel succeed was giving us an action packed story of an alien hiding out Earth, only to rise as #Superman when his own kind come back for him. Where I’d argue it failed was in not embracing the idea that Clark is a product of the humanity that raised him.

However, it’s exactly that humanity that makes superhero stories, especially #Superman, work. In film school, we always discussed the concept of “grounding” the audience. No amount of world building or “save the cat” beats matter if we as humans don’t have an empathetic way in.

Yes, this song came out before Smallville, but it could be considered an unofficial companion. Not only was the song all over the radio at the time, and in the soundtrack of (probably, almost) every WB show at the time; but it’s great harmony with the show’s #Superman.

With all the talk we’re having about lost media literacy & a lack of empathy since 2020, I think the Snyder bros & MAGA bros who think #Superman is soft or woke should refresh on this pre-9/11 take on Supes that touched on the humanity Gunn is going for.
