Shaykh al-Islam ibn Qudamah al-Maqdisi (d. 620 H.) writes regarding the spurious claim that Ahl as-Sunnah seem to be guilty of ta’wil at times: ‘If it is said: “But you yourselves have made ta’wil of some verses and reports, since you say concerning -

The wife of Jahm ibn Safwān came and heard a man say: Allāh is upon his throne. She replied: [something] limited upon [something] limited. Al-Asma‘ī [d.216AH] said: She is an unbeliever due to this statement; for this is the statement of her Imām [Jahm]

The salafs must have made that up I guess.
@Muhamme25206330 @ZaatarHoney2 I was talking about in the sense of an attribute. The Jahmiyyah did not affirm an attribute of ‘Uluw for Allah, however they did say He is located in every place with His Essence, including above the throne.

بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحمَـٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ This is a revised and updated version of one of my earlier threads from a few years ago, regarding the (false) claim that the Madhab of the Hanbalis was Tafwidh al-Ma‘na until ibn Taymiyyah came along.

The question is still up for any serious ash'ari/maturidi to answer.
@abutalhahashemi @mahmud_murrah Why would the salafs give exclusively examples of literal 'uluw and make takfir of the Jahmiyyah for denying it and giving metaphorical interpretations (like you're doing), if they themselves somehow affirmed it metaphorically too? It's time to stop the cope.

Regarding the verse: "And the mosques are for Allāh, so invoke not anyone along with Allāh (72:18)." Qatādah (d. 117) said: "When the Jews and Christians entered their churches and synagogues, they would commit shirk with Allāh. Therefore, Allāh commanded His Prophet to make the

This is misleading. He frames “‘aql” as if it only means the most basic, indubitable truths (like the law of non-contradiction) so that people nod along and say: “well of course revelation can’t contradict reason.” As if that’s the very same thing they rely on when

Adherence to the Sunnah expiates the major sins just as opposing the Sunnah nullifies good deeds. If the people of the Sunnah fall short in their deeds, their beliefs uphold them. If the people of innovation’s deeds uphold them, their beliefs let them fall. — Imām Ibn Al-Qayyim

Al-Ījī the Ashʿarī Imām (d. 756 AH) said: Allāh’s statement: “The Most Merciful Istawā over the Throne” [Qurʾān 20:5] indicates sitting. However, this is contradicted by rational evidence which shows the impossibility of sitting being attributed to Him, the Most High.
