Another incredible starling murmuration at
@YWTPottericCarr
last night - right over the visitor centre this time. We're really quite jealous of our colleagues based at the nature reserve - how fantastic that they can see this magic from the office window!
VICTORY FOR ASKHAM BOG! ✨
The Secretary of State agreed that the appeal should be dismissed. Askham Bog can continue to thrive for wildlife and for people, for years to come!🌿
We are overjoyed! ❤️ Together we have made this happen - a heartfelt thank you.

We're shocked that someone has dumped ~1000 tyres at Brockadale nature reserve ☹️ As a charity, removing them costs us time & money we don't have, impacting our work for wildlife🐾 We know there are people across Yorkshire doing fab things everyday - can you help/share our story?

We think Yorkshire is the best place in the world 🌍 With stunning landscapes and incredible wildlife, there truly is no place like it ❤️

We're THRILLED that planned development next to Askham Bog has just been unanimously refused by
@CityofYork
, facing over 7000 objections ✨
We are so happy that the story of Askham Bog will continue. A fantastic victory for wildlife, for conservation, and for this special place!
Exciting news from Potteric Carr nature reserve! 🎉
Black-winged stilts have successfully bred for the first time ever in Yorkshire with two fledglings spotted on Tuesday afternoon 🐣 (1/4)

Hedgehogs are starting to emerge from their winter hibernation 🦔🦔🦔
Do be careful if you're starting to do work in your garden - check carefully for hoggies before doing any strimming or cutting back!

Great news! Corncrake have likely bred on our Wheldrake Ings reserve, along with curlews and common terns! It's been a bumper harvest across Lower Derwent Valley
A huge thankyou to
@Protyre
for stepping up after 1000 tyres were dumped on Brockadale nature reserve. They sent the tyres to be recycled & made into athletics tracks, playgrounds & more. Their support is hugely appreciated!
Thankyou everyone who offered support - you're fab! 💚
Sometimes seeing things from different angles just makes them all the more incredible! 😍😍😍
Thank you so much John H Brackenbury for this fantastic, unusual photo!
Oops we made a mistake here!
Slugs and snails are good for some garden wildlife but NOT hedgehogs - please see advice from the amazing
@HedgehogCabin
, thank you everyone who corrected us 💚🦔
Slugs & snails are great! 🐌They're a top menu item for favourite garden guests like frogs, song thrushes, ground beetles, & hedgehogs.
Make friends with molluscs this spring & lets celebrate these unsung heroes. 👏

1. Have a routine
2. Get outdoors (or have plants inside if you cannot)
3. Exercise outside (so good for your mental health!)
4. Meet one person outdoors for a socially-distanced walk

Wow! A young walrus visits Scarborough - these amazing, marine creatures travel long distances and deserve our admiration and respect.
Huge thanks to

and local orgs for safety and checks on site while it has a rest🙌
As insect populations plummet we’re alarmed to learn that Government has agreed the use of highly damaging neonic pesticides, which are banned across Europe over concerns that they kill the pollinators we rely on for survival. Say no to neonics 👉 🐝
We'd love to see more of these around! 🦔🦔🦔
This hedgehog awareness sign is at the University of York, who have put all sorts of things in place to help hedgehogs on their campus!
Newborn fox cubs spend their first weeks in the cosy warmth of the den. As the weather gets milder they will soon be venturing out to play in the spring sunshine!
Some lovely news from our team at Askham Bog - they've discovered their first harvest mouse nest on the reserve!
This nest will have been for a family, but the young leave home in August and they'll all make smaller nests for winter 🐁
Another successful seal release by the
@BDMLR
volunteers at Spurn National Nature Reserve. What a fantastic job you guys do in support of our Yorkshire wildlife! Thank you 😊
After weeks of hot dry weather Yorkshire's hedgehogs are struggling to stay hydrated. This little fellow is being given plenty to drink at a hedgehog hospital in York. As the heatwave continues please leave some water at ground level in your garden so hedgehogs can reach it!
What's that you say?

this Saturday, and we've got something rather exciting to share with you!
In the meantime, we'd love to know... what's your favourite Yorkshire view?
'Tis the season for bonfires, and especially so this year with outdoor socialising being the only option for many of us 🔥 Make sure you check your wood piles for hogs snoozing! 🦔

As gardening season approaches, choose a natural lawn. Here's why 👉
Artificial lawn is a no entry sign for wildlife ⛔️
It pushes worms & insects out. Birds & hedgehogs suffer 😞
Flowers are food for bees 🌺🐝
UK gardens are a vast living landscape & refuge. Think wildlife!
Marine life washed up on the Holderness Coast - an estimated 25,000 lobsters were transported to merchants tanks at Bridlington and released at sea this morning in deeper water.

We loved seeing our meeerl (as it's pronounced in East Yorkshire) on

Our nature reserves assistant Paul Wray filmed the mole puttering through a very icy North Cave Wetlands reserve in November - it's also a great place to spot bitterns, waders and birds of prey!
Sound up! 🔊 This is what healthy peatlands sound (and look like!). Wet, and very squelchy!
Most of our peatlands are dry and bare. Help us restore them:
We have 60 breeding pairs of snow bunting in the UK (all in Scotland!). They're joined by 10,000-15,000 visiting birds from the arctic every winter❄️
Thanks to Roy Churchill for this beautiful photo 📸

Wishing Sir David Attenborough a Happy 97th Birthday today! 🎉
Here he is with our Peat Programme Manager, Rosie during a visit to our Askham Bog nature reserve on the outskirts of York.
Such an inspiration to us all. ⭐️
Thank you for everything you do for wildlife! 👏💚
A sunny morning and one of the first bees of the year we've spotted! 🐝 Snowdrops are super important as an early flowering plant for bees - even more reason to love them poking through the winter ground! 🌱
Corvids galore! We think the jay's relationship skills deserve a special mention: attentive males carefully observe their partners to determine which food they most desire (chocolate for us, please!)
