Comparing cue-driven vs. free reward consumption (and vs. "false alarms") we suggest these stereotyped manifold dynamics reflect goal-directed reward anticipation, rather than licking, taste, or positive valence. E.g., they were completely gone in free consumption.

We found stereotyped manifold structure and dynamics across different mice and motivations. They were so consistent that they enabled single-trial decoding across different animals, rewards, and motivations! .[In insula, but not in Visual Ctx of mice doing the same behavior. ]
