I love math, but framing non-mathy fields as "swapping icons in HTML" is IMHO detrimental in 2 ways:
1. Presents things such as human-computer interaction & large-scale software engineering/design as trivial.
2. Teaches students to think some fields are superior to others. 1/2
Every year I teach CS theory, I find that I need to apologize less and less about having so much math content. CS practice is getting more & more mathy.
Now I just ask students if they want to their future job to be one where they read texts of first type, or the second type:

Hizballah fire at Israel from a school. Hamas fires from hospitals. Much of the danger to Palestinians is b/c their leaders use them as human shields. They know it deters Israel b/c while Hamas targets innocent Israelis, Israel goes above&beyond to not hurt innocent Palestinians.
Hezbollah has fired rockets from a high school in the village of Kfar Shuba, using the children inside as human shields in an attack on an IDF base on Mount Dov. A mosque is also in close proximity to the high school, hindering the IDF from neutralizing the Hezbollah fighters.

Israel vacated Gaza (uprooted every Israeli) in 2005. Gaza under totalitarian self rule since. Today, terrorists from Gaza infiltrated Israel's sovereign area (defined by UN/US/EU/PLO(!)). Their goal: murdering+taking Israeli *civilians* hostage. Iran+Hizballah cheering.

I call bullshit. I worked for Google from 2007-2013. Getting accepted there as a software engineer was much harder then than it is today, so that probably puts me above average in SWE skills. It took me a lot of time after that to start to understand how to be a social scientist.

Columbia/Barnard faculty have signed an open letter supporting our students, making the point that identifying with the suffering of Gazans and historically contextualizing the current war in Israel/Gaza is not anti-Semitic. Please read and share.
