It was believed in medieval times that hedgehogs had spikes so they could roll over fruit to carry home to their children, which is not true but is a really cute idea

@WeirdMedieval There's a beloved Israeli children's book that has a hedgehog visiting a sick child and accidentally getting covered in mulberries. There's even a park with a bunch of sculptures of the story.

@WeirdMedieval Similar: In ancient Europe, it was believed that the pelican would cut its breast open with its beak and feed its young with its own blood if there was not enough food, even though pelicans don’t actually do that.

@WeirdMedieval @mart_paas As if hedgehogs could be any cuter. A favorite of Latvians, as "E" is for "ezis" in every children's "ABC". The rhyme says the hedgehog steps elegantly in his pursuit of butterflies.

@WeirdMedieval Slovenian children's song, Ježek teka teka ( Hedgehog is running), literally describes that, hedgehog rolling around, gathering apples and pears for his children. There's also a song about a huge pear, being carried away on 🦔's spikes, wishing human children ate it instead. 😃
