Bacteria are constantly being predated by bacteriophage (phage). To counteract this predation, bacteria have evolved a myriad of defense systems. Some of these systems specifically digest infecting...

Beautiful story @Aathmaja and very happy to work with Jeremy and @FreddolinoLab on this (with @GeoffreySeverin, @macyEpell, and Meng Hsieh co-authors from my group and Rebecca Hurto from Lyida's team). So important to not just consider biofilm formation, but also dispersal!
Check out my latest work from @WatersLabMSU lab with our amazing collaborators Jeremy Schroeder @FreddolinoLab on how V. cholerae maintains its cyclic di-GMP levels to maintain the balance between motile and sessile forms. (1/3) https://t.co/7v5rKshbal

Very happy to have Micah in the lab as he is always willing to help other with their protein work and share his crazy Alaska stories!
Next up in our @MSUMGI Micro Biography series is Dr. Micah Ferrell. Micah is an MGI postdoctoral fellow who works in Dr. Chris Waters' lab. Read more here about his childhood in Alaska, how he came to join MGI, and his research: https://t.co/tmrg4HR3fb

Great article! We were very fortunate to have Amber in the lab as a BS/MS student and then super lab manager, and I am excited for her in her now role as the new Academic Program Coordinator at MGI where she will be able to help all the grad students of the dept!
Next up in our @MSUMGI Micro Biography series is Amber Bedore. Amber is the Academic Program Coordinator and also an MGI alumna. She earned her BS / MS in our department and was a research tech and lab manager in the @WatersLabMSU ! Read more here: https://t.co/rKlFG4wrOA

Very happy to have Aathmaja in my group!! Here is a great article about her scientific journey.
The MGI website features "Micro Biographies" of people in our community, and the newest one highlights Dr. Aathmaja Anandhi Rangarajan, a postdoc in Dr. Chris Waters' lab. #womeninSTEM #spartanresearchers Read more here: https://t.co/8Xa4VX99ZP

Thus there is a really cool ping-pong evolutionary interaction of phage evolving resistance and subsequent sensitivity to different Type IV systems: 3/

Jasper showed that it restricts T-even phage in E.coli, but resistance mutants can be isolated that lose the glucose modification. Those mutant have a significant tradeoff as they become sensitive to other Type IV restriction systems targeting unglucosylated 5hmc 2/

Congratulations to @Jas_B_Gomez on his new work in @biorxivpreprint describing a new Type IV restriction system in V. cholerae which is embedded in the middle of a Type I restriction operon. This system targets glucosylated 5 hydrox methyl cytosines 1/ https://t.co/6cD6l7HxRC
