#DYK? The leading factor contributing to home cooking fires is unattended equipment per @USfire. If you're cooking for Thanksgiving this week, keep anything that can catch fire away from your stovetop and use timers as a reminder to check on food you're cooking.

Don’t wait until it’s too late to prepare for flash flooding. Be ready—make sure you have multiple ways to get emergency alerts. Always listen to local officials when severe weather is threatening your area. They may suggest changing travel plans or routes or taking shelter.

Cold water can take your breath away, literally. A sudden plunge can trigger a gasp reflex, causing you to inhale water. Stay safe by dressing in layers, wearing a life jacket over a dry suit, and remembering that even wet clothes can help you float.
