“If I am a writer, there are some books I can write, if I am a translator I can be 40, 60 completely different writers and write novels that I could never have imagined. “ Discover translator Frank Wynne’s thoughts in this interview with Marjorie Brennan: https://t.co/PrsrEzSYdF

Emily in Paris isn’t good good, but the scene where Gabriel complains they only ever communicate in English and then rants to Emily in French? Man, best thing I’ve seen in a while.

Tired of reemphasising points about "correctness" and "grammaticality" in language. So here are some fun linguistic facts: 1. Not all languages have tense 2. There are around 6000 languages in the world of which about 5% are sign languages 3. Most people are multilingual

Guardian reveals wonderfully useful German word: 'Westminster is witnessing an outbreak of Torschlusspanik. The translation from German is “panic at the gate shutting”, commonly associated with age: the dread of missing opportunities that will never come again.'

Book idea: the myriad dialects of Italian; a page on each of them describing the interesting features about how they have evolved from, or somehow preserved, their mother tongue Latin. If it exists, do tell!

I don't understand the the rules for the NYT 100 books of the century. Many of the translated titles were originally published in the last century, which leads me to the conclusion that whoever made the list does not think a book is published until it is published in English?
