How long can you be the “dark horse” in a race until you become, I guess, just the horse?

Everyone thinks an IP moat is built for a startup by one flashy patent but the only true IP moat is thousands of small but correct decisions based on learning.

There was a great series on 99% Invisible on this topic recently, covering how a changing climate is impacting obvious places like coastal Florida but ALSO supposed “climate havens” like Vermont in unpredictable ways.

Just today a major publication is running a story along these lines, that there are safe and unsafe areas to move. This is oversimplified at best and perniciously misleading at worst. Every region has its range of risks and it’s not possible to predict the evolution decades out.

Yet another example of one of my least favorite and most persistent media narratives around climate, that it’s something you can just move away from. Climate impacts will be widespread and unpredictable. The only “climate haven” is addressing the problem globally with solutions.

For incumbents, the window between “we have a ton of resources we could do that if we wanted to” and “wow we are way behind on this tech” can be vanishingly small.

An interesting thing about startups, almost by definition they start less experienced than incumbents but then as they scale they gain experience way faster in their niche than any incumbent can, i.e. a 100 person company gains 100 employee-years of experience each year.
