Faced with the choice between an evidence based plan to improve Stanley Park for cyclists, seniors, mobility challenged and businesses versus an old NPA grudge, ABC chose the latter last night. Welcome to
@KenSimCity
. All opposed?
@ParkBoard
tonight: Removal of Stanley Park bike lane now results in 50% of cars going 50kph (in a 30kph zone) as opposed to 11%. Bike usage of SP Drive way down. Bikes on seawall up. Pretty much everyone is losing. You broke this
@Vote4ABC
Devastating. 160,000 dead trees in Stanley Park. It’s no consolation that 90% of them are less than 20cm diameter.
#ClimateEmergency
Like this post if you think Vancouver needs a better public discussion about our urban trees.
How petty does it get? Last week
@KenSimCity
did not get his choice of Chair for
@ParkBoard
. That’s cause the
@VanGreens
tipped the balance with split ABC. This week it appears he wants
@Dave_Eby
to abolish PB altogether. Waiting to hear abt private ABC meeting this aft.
Scott, the problem is that no one knows if
@Vote4ABC
is joking or serious anymore about bikes in the city. You’ve worked hard to lose our trust. Keep it up. 👍
It took 22 years of community leadership. Tonight
@ParkBoard
approved naturalized park plan for buried streambed known as Gibby’s Field on E18th (here under rare Vancouver snow). We can save this city one tiny pocket park at a time.
@VanGreens
Thx for helpful images. For context: No one planted Hemlock in
#StanleyPark
. They regenerated after devastating selective logging across park 1860-1880 (itself opposed and in conflict with resident FNs). In 1929 we aerial sprayed 6 tons of lead arsenic to kill looper. 1/5
Riding the
#StanleyPark
causeway and can see a fraction of the trees the park has been removing.
“The City of Vancouver says over 160,000 trees are being cut down in Stanley Park due to a looper moth infestation”
My take as anger rises: ABC could have bought social peace for 4 years on the SP bike lane by voting for Option A (removal of east side 30% and making permanent 70% on west side). Might have been unanimous with
@VanGreens
support. We'll never know. Public debate matters.
I’d love to see somebody look into
@ThomasDigby1
’s suggestion that ABC
@ParkBoard
commissioners may have caucused around this decision ahead of last night’s meeting, predetermining the outcome of the vote, which AFIK is not allowed. Who in the media is looking into that? Anybody?
Promises made, promises kept. Very proud of the whole Park Board team.
This decision is a win for accessibility and marks the first step towards a Stanley Park that works for everyone.
#vanpoli
In preparation for the removal of the Stanley Park temporary bike lane, scheduled to begin next week, crews will be carrying out preliminary work from 10pm-5am this evening. During this time, and across the weekend, the park will remain open to cars and the public. 1/2
Park Commissioners
@BrennanBastyo
,
@l_christe
,
@ThomasDigby1
and I have agreed to work together to collaborate as a majority, and to provide competent and thoughtful leadership for the people of Vancouver and to ensure our cherished
@ParkBoard
is protected.
@ParkBoard
I am deeply concerned for safety now. Bikes and active transport will likely be using both lanes. Reminder that due care is everyone’s obligation, cars and bikes together.

Decision: Amended motion passed directing staff to update fire risk mitigation plan to address dead trees and materials that might constitute a wildfire fuel risk, and working closely with Vancouver Fire and Rescue Services and local Host Nations.
Relieved that
@Vote4ABC
has abandoned their election platform and voted w me for reasonable fee increase
@ParkBoard
. The key is significantly improved low income user access w LAP program.
total and deliberate misinformation. Kits pool is a CoV owned and built facility.
@ParkBoard
merely operates it. Now Kits pool on verge of shutdown (hope the Kingtide this week does not destroy it). My guess is $50m rebuild. CoV has been massively underfunding PB facilities
@JohnCCoupar
@KenSimCity
@ParkBoard
Wow, strong words,
@JohnCCoupar
, but no mention of audit which showed lack of financial acumen, mismanagement of finances & total lack of maintenance over the years & duplication of decision makers. Let’s find out what
@KenSimCity
can do without crying over spilt milk.
Suffice it to say ABC could have picked a bike lane solution that met the needs of disability community, park operators and hundreds of cyclists, but instead chose the option for cars.
#ClimateActionNow
@ParkBoard
This bike lane has absolutely nothing to do with fighting climate change. There is a serious misunderstanding around what a bike lane in a park has to do with reducing emissions. Suffice to say, I’m very proud of the
@Vote4ABC
team on Park Board for getting this done. This video

A year ago today a tornado from the Salish Sea tore through Pacific Spirit park. A hundred Cedar and Douglas Fir down. That's when I decided to run for

#ClimateEmergency
big vote tmrw, pensive ride today.
@VanGreens
@ParkBoard
. big test for
@KenSimCity
and
@Vote4ABC
. can they cut through misinformation? New plan makes real improvements for biz in park, seniors and mobilty challenged.
Lenny you have no clue about
@ParkBoard
priorities. Only vote seeking behaviour. We have a public engagement underway, and another synth turf going in 2km away. The City expects fairness.
We heard resounding voice: people in south Vancouver earnestly desire a turf field & a spray park, especially young generations. They currently have to travel to west side or even to other cities to access these amenities. This is NOT right!
These amenities will create a sense
80 year old pilings. Deck underwater at each king tide. The pier on life-support. An artifact of colonization. Tonight
@ParkBoard
@Vote4ABC
wasting your money on $1.7m repairs…then another $1m, and another, and another. Hey!
#ClimateActionNow
A motion with pretty much identical substance was passed unanimously by the previous Green/NPA/Cope/Team/Vision
@ParkBoard
in July 2022. I will seek to have this
@Vote4ABC
motion ruled out of order as redundant.
Big opportunity for
@Vote4ABC
to set things right on Stanley Park bike lane! Staff report solves key complaints of businesses and of disability advocates...and preserves large part of bike lane.
@JodieEmery
@GibeauMirella
Actually, bike lane is pretty busy (Strava map). Drivers should avoid peak hours at SP. And be sure to park outside if you are fully abled.
so true. this is the kind of misinformation my Commissioner friends
@Vote4ABC
need to cut through and ignore. new plan Option B provides major improvements for biz in park, seniors and mobility challenged.
If you want to know what Vancouver residents are up against when they advocate for safety, peace and quiet, lower emissions, and true accessibility in
#StanleyPark
have a quick read here. The misinformation from
@beach_everyone
is absolutely epic.
#LoveTheLane
the

@Vote4ABC
promise to freeze the fees
@ParkBoard
vanished like a bride’s nightie (as my friend’s mother used to say). We’re looking at +5.6%. That’s no freeze. Get ready
#vanpoli
We’re spending $400,000 to REMOVE a bike lane?
With $$ coming from “accounts dedicated for permanent cycling infrastructure”? 👀
That is infuriating and irresponsible. I hope
@Vote4ABC
can tell us what is being cut in order to fund this.
#VanPoli

That was easy! Dozens of signatures at W4th Khatsalano Street Party for my
@ParkBoard
motion re:Forest fire risk in Stanley Park. Let’s convince
@Vote4ABC
that Vanc wants action on
#climatechange
@VanGreens
We no longer spray for bugs or top trees for views like the old days. Current plan preserves as much ecological value as possible while reducing risk of forest fire and roadway tree fall. It’s tragic/devastating to see but healthier and done w consent of FNs. 4/5

: The BC Government is urging people across the province to conserve water. This includes taking shorter showers and only running full dish washers or washing machines. Minister Bowinn Ma - "This is an extremely challenging time. This is immensely stressful."
I love option B, which preserves 100% of bike lane. But even option A, which makes 70% on west side effectively permanent is better than the current plan (Option C, boooo).
The mayor sees no value in 135 years of local civic engagement around parks and rec in Vancouver. But voices matter. Stories matter. Hired staff bureaucrats will never achieve what elected citizens can do.
@Dave_Eby
don’t sell us out!
@VanGreens
Wednesday’s vote is the first step towards bringing parks and recreation under the direct oversight of Council, with the objective to enhance operational efficiency and community involvement. Excited to continue working with our Provincial partners to bring about a new era of
Lead arsenic killed 90% of Hemlock looper moth, and likely everything else that crawled, flew or lived deep in soil. This practice continued into 1960s. 2/5
