It's perfectly legal to lie in a political ad in Australia. Companies can't lie about their products, so why can parties lie about their opponent's policies - or their own? Australia needs national truth in political advertising laws. @ebony_bennett #auspol

If a healthy democracy is a priority for the next Parliament, truth in political advertising laws should be on their agenda. Want to know more? Read the factsheet ⤵️ https://t.co/uAAKoq66li

@TheAusInstitute @ebony_bennett Nobody can arbitrate “truth”. Most certainly not the government who benefit the most from a false narrative.

@TheAusInstitute @ebony_bennett YES! I simply cannot understand why we cannot have national truth in political advertising laws. The electorate not only DESERVES TRUTH, the electorate NEEDS TRUTH. Such a law would not benefit one political party , or independent, over another. The playing field would be level.

@TheAusInstitute @ebony_bennett Agree wholeheartedly - but Labor and The Greens (your pin ups) would be disproportionately disadvantaged

@TheAusInstitute @ebony_bennett What was that about organisations with agendas being truthful in what they say Ebony? You should follow up what your colleague Richard is saying about TAI’s JobKeeper claims 👇
Sorry to break it to you Richard… TAI’s audited accounts show it: - claimed $707k JobKeeper; and - repaid $407k (ie kept 42%). TAI has also misrepresented this 👇 @MelbInvest

@TheAusInstitute @ebony_bennett No. Because who gets to decide what's true and what's not? Certainly cannot trust you Commies to do it.

@TheAusInstitute @ebony_bennett Tax payers should not be funding political parties campaign ads. Especially when they are allowed to lie to our face using OUR money. What a system we are beholden to.

@TheAusInstitute @ebony_bennett Are you sure you want to handicap Albo like this? He’s don’t nothing but lie about the coalition’s policy’s for the last 2 weeks.

@TheAusInstitute @ebony_bennett Oh? Lying is bad?
We need to fix the PRRT, but lets start with few facts. Here Denniss of TAI says Exxon have never paid a cent in company tax, which is blatantly untrue, no matter how fun it is to claim. (pro tip they pay their Australian taxes via their Esso Australia entities, of course).

@TheAusInstitute @ebony_bennett Of course if you lunatics had your way, the communist regime would decide what is and isn't true. Orwell is rolling in his grave.

@TheAusInstitute @ebony_bennett Who defines truth? The CSIRO who lied about wind and solar costs?

@TheAusInstitute @ebony_bennett The problem is, who judges truth? Remember ABC RMIT Fact Fakers? Just propagandists, not a truth between them.

@TheAusInstitute @ebony_bennett Who is going to determine what's a lie or not? That can only be done by a branch of government. I don't want that. It would open up to lawsuits and appeals which can delay elections as those standing for elections should be given due process Politics and business is not the same

@TheAusInstitute @ebony_bennett If you’re a politician and you lie or deceive you should be expelled. When asked a question, answer it!!! …a reply is not an answer!

@TheAusInstitute @ebony_bennett Because whether or not a product does as advertised is a fact that is easy to determine. But whether a proposed government policy will achieve a particular outcome is speculation, not fact, which is why political disagreements exist in the first place.

@TheAusInstitute @ebony_bennett What a very good idea! I only want to listen to Labor policies during this election, because the LNP are telling way too many lies. Thus I am trying to keep clear of the debates & discussions where I have to endure LNPs lying. Am having faith in Labor. @AlboMP

@TheAusInstitute @ebony_bennett Yes! Bring integrity back into politics. It has become more about who can throw the most manure instead of the policies.

@TheAusInstitute @ebony_bennett This is one of the most important issues in our electoral system, a system I genuinely believe is one of the best in the world! Bring some accountability into politics!

@TheAusInstitute @ebony_bennett The whole framework of political debate is based on lying and I regular use your organisation's "independent" statements as example for that. Calling the kettle black. Any other "independent" intellectual takes today? #auspol #auspol25

@TheAusInstitute @ebony_bennett @TheAusInstitute also presents misinformation and disinformation. Banning false info with laws threatens free speech. Let people decide what’s true through open debate. #auspol @LibertariansAus
