I don't care. It just proves that l am more aware of pandemic threats than most others and the simple measures we can take to prevent the spread. I am very comfortable wearing a mask like many Asian people who are culturally attuned to protecting others from infection.
@chantz_y
Agree, we have a lot to learn from Asian culture when it comes to infection control. They have learned the hard way while some Australians whine about simply putting on a mask when in public.
Will the provaping advocates in years to come accept the failures and resultant harms caused by this deeply flawed policy allowing open access to kids?

would lead to more addiction and dual use from a new youth market who would likely have never smoked...and it is working.
A staggering 4.3 million vapers in the past decade in Great Britian with an estimated 350,000 vapers never having smoked a cigarette. That's not harm reduction, it's just bad policy!
@ash_ldn
Vaping advocates claim "switching" from cigarettes to e-cigarettes is "quitting smoking". Fact is, its just more of big tobacco's "smoking light" diversion to keep smokers hooked while addicting a whole new generation to vaping and dual use.
@Peter_Fitz
Agreed, Australians wouldn't accept that kind of political shite here. Look at the rise of the Teals. We are a little more educated than your average American, and much less paranoid!
Ecig advocates argue that ecigs are "the same as NRTs" but they fail to mention ecigs were designed to mimic smoking, have massive marketing and promotions, push kiddy flavours and are designed to hook kids. That's why kids don't use NRTs but they sure love candy crush!
E-cig enthusiasts respond to evidence that kids who use e-cigs are more likely to smoke later: "Oh those were the kids who would smoke anyway!" Yet when people quit smoking with e-cigs, they don't say "oh those were the people who would quit anyway!
There are lessons to be learned from relaxed vaping policies in countries like NZ. And that's the need for much stronger policies to reduce access by kids to highly addictive and harmful products like ecigs.
More culture and environment destroyed with the support of governments who are mostly puppets to big business.

. More than 50% of new users are non smoking youth while smoking prevalence remains static. So much for lame harm reduction theories. Plenty more harm to come
@martinrev21
The few rich can only consume so much. But anyone who seriously believes more people don't lead to massively more consumption are demonstrating growth bias.
So, 14.5% of school kids vaped in the past 30 days? That's 14 times the smoking rate and at least 400% greater prevalence than we would have expected with youth smoking trends over the past 2 decades. So how does this upturn qualify as harm reduction?
"While flavoring compounds tested may be safe for ingestion, these results show they are not safe for inhalation. Cinnamon, vanilla and butter flavoring chemicals were the most toxic while mixing e-liquid flavors caused by far the most toxicity to white blood cells."
Cutting nicotine to levels that are no longer addictive in tobacco products would have greatly reduced smoking and helped prevent avoidable death and suffering. However, the tobacco industry and its allies criticised the measure as “prohibition”. Familiar?
It will be interesting to see with time how lung injuries and other health conditions from vaping compare with the lung cancers and COPDs from smoking. What is certain in these early days of investigation is that the harms could be considerable.

for fueling UKs ecig epidemic.
While vaping advocates continue to carp on about their "journey to health" they conveniently ignore the vaping epidemic among young kids who would likely have never smoked. Vaping prevalence may soon overtake smoking in youth. That's not harm reduction!
"Approximately one in seven youth ecig users transitioned to cigarette smoking". That's greater than the cessation success rate of ecigs at only 10%. Recommendations are that regulators should aim to deter all nicotine product use among children.
"EVALI-nicotine was occurring for many years prior to EVALI-VEA, and is still occurring now. Case series completed to date have found that 15-20% of patients with EVALI were sole vapers of nicotine containing e-cigs and did not use THC in any form". Prof. Laura Crotty Alexander.
Australia took smoking from ‘normal’ to ‘uncommon’: here’s how we are also doing it with vaping. For a start, we don't go in for industry solutions.
@ASHNZ2025
@OHID
Despite the occasional setbacks, big tobacco will continue to target kids because they know their future sales of ecigs and combustibles depends on early age nicotine addiction.
@simonahac
These grotesque profiteers will find no sympathy with Australian consumers. Our coal, our gas, and everyone knows the supply has nothing to do with any war in Ukraine.
More than 18% of 18 to 24 yr old's reported currently using e-cigs while of those under 25 years who reported current e-cigarette use, 72% have never smoked. That's not harm reduction!

The only "tobacco harms deniers" l see are industry shills saying "nothing to see here" on ecigs. It also happened with industry combustibles harm deniers, so no surprises. Fool us once...

Bloomberg is a well known tobacco harm reduction denier. Accepting money from him is most definitely a conflict of interest. His money influences opinion and policy.
Good old PMI the company that now wants a "Smoke Free World". Still managed to ship 621 billion cigarettes globally last year while BAT shipped 605 billion. And they both spent over $2.4 billion in F1 sponsorship because advertising doesn't attract kids.
Its just bizarre when a smoker claims to have "quit smoking" when they've simply "switched" long term to e-cigs. Like a drinker claiming to have "quit drinking" by "switching" to light beer. It likely confirms the brain changes (damage) occurring with nicotine addiction.
It's funny how people making money from vapes think they know better than health authorities on harms. Evidence of ENDS to support cessation is questionable with the greater likelihood that ecigs lead to an increase in young people taking up smoking.
Canadian survey data shows currently, two-thirds of e-cigarette users either continue to smoke cigarettes (36%) or have never smoked (33%). So much for harm reduction!
"Nicotine in e-cig vapour promoted acute endothelial damage, pulmonary inflammation and chronic pulmonary functional and structural alterations." If this doesn't send shivers down the spines of vaping advocates, not sure what will.
#NotHarmReduction
It's almost certain that oral and lung cancers will appear in the cohort of "exclusive vapers" in years to come. Only question is; which ecig users will get cancer and what will be the scale of the harms? Vaping may increase risk of cancer via

Look at this electronic mass of plastic batteries and toxic chemicals to be used for a few days and then dumped in the pristine beachside environment where l walk. How many millions of tonnes of ecig waste can we look forward to over the next decade? That’s not harm reduction!
How could someone be so out of touch with their body to think that nicotine vaping is helping their anxiety instead of being the cause of it? Its called "withdrawal" for a reason.
#Addiction
You can't be much of an environmentalist if you pump nicotine and toxic compounds into your lungs daily. But, next time you vape, try to think about the millions of tons of plastic and electronic waste from ecigs created every month. It's enough to make you, and the world sick.
Harm reduction for drug policy makes complete sense while tobacco harm reduction is just industry spin to expand nicotine addiction and dual use harms

@InsidePMI
Vaping advocates want to retain flavors in ecigs saying they are needed to attract quitters. This is despite evident harms emerging. Do they really think this is going to end well?
Vaping is not a cessation tool; its mainly a 'get them hooked young' tool, a 'switching', and 'continue using nicotine' tool. That's why Big Tobacco will buy into any vaping product -JUUL, Elf Bar, Lost Mary etc.- that has a large market share with youth.
"Nicotine is as addictive as “hard” drugs such as heroin. Smokers (now vapers) start the habit as children, are addicted to nicotine by the time they are adults, and thereafter the choice to stop becomes an illusion". If they could rewrite their ecig policy now, l bet they would.
Never a vaper goes on to smoking? More delusional conjecture from the vaping brigade. In fact from 3%to over 10% of young ecig users also dual use combustibles.
@ChaunceyGardner
@TahirTturk
@US_FDA
Never a vaper goes to smoking. Non smokers do not know. But the smell of the tar is not good. İf someone begins vaping, he/she must be mad to smoke. Unless of course they are deprived from e-cigs. (They are nicotine addicts now)
Imagine offering an obese person vanilla, cinnamon or mango flavoured doughnuts to help them with their food cravings? That's what flavoured ecigs are for smokers trying to quit. But flavours are great if you want to entice the young toward nicotine addiction.

"E acetate in the e-cig fluid doesn't reveal what chemicals were inhaled by people using these vaping devices. It's in liquid form and then you heat it to very high temperatures, and you aerosolize it. It changes the chemical constituents in that fluid."
When pro-vaping advocates are asked about the teen vaping epidemic, they say nothing to see here. In fact, there is plenty to worry about for health authorities when the largest NZ school survey of kids in years 9–13 identifies 20% are vaping daily.
Big Tobacco Double Speak:

I am waiting to see one, just one, valid argument -from a pro-vaping academic (vape shop owners excluded) - on why a prescription only model would not work if the claim is that ecigs are in fact a smoking cessation tool.
Use of cannabis and nicotine together during pregnancy was associated with higher risks (twice as high) for infant death and maternal and neonatal morbidity compared with no exposure to either substance. Risks were 62% higher with nicotine use alone.
Great to see Californians are not fooled by big tobacco's attempts to hook their kids to their latest novel tobacco products by passing Prop 31 with 62.2% of the vote!
Smoking prevalence went from 1 cig per week in 1900 to 83 cigs per week in 1963 largely due to mass production, mildness, packaging, convenience and addictiveness. Celeb endorsements played an important part. The industry hasn't changed much.
@TheRealPBarry
Its obvious why Rupert chose Lachlan over James. Lachlan has the same far right wing views on all issues including climate change. Its also why they go for guys like Tony Abbott on their board. No changes to policy here!
How does this qualify as harm reduction when 15 year old never smokers have amongst the biggest uptake of ecigs? This is why strict controls are needed on nicotine products.
You want to reduce smoking prevalence? This is how you do it: Keep increasing restrictions on sales, increasing excise tax annually, and force big tobacco to reduce nicotine levels until they are non existent.
