Funny how (for those of us old enough to remember) that back in the 70s/80s/90s, with a much smaller #population : we had no skills shortage, affordable housing, more nature, less crowded roads/hospitals, lower emissions & a generally better quality of life 🤔

Returning from my outback trip I was shocked at the extent of #landclearing in western #NSW I actually witnessed the #soil being stripped from barren fields- in places the dust storm was equal to a very thick fog. It's one thing reading about it- totally different seeing it. 😠

The great unmentioned cost of #AustraliaBurning is the #spiritual cost. We all draw strength directly from the natural world, rather than, or as well as a religion... whether we realise this or not. This loss is unmeasurable & certainly not reflected in a hollow #GDP figure.

#Trees lower air temperature by creating shade & by evaporating #water in their leaves- essentially acting as the earth's air conditioners. Unfortunately though, this service is performed free of charge, & so adds nothing to our #GDP /Economic Growth figure. #RedefiningGrowth

I don't understand our obsession with growth. Even in my youth, I had an innate sense that humanity couldn't keep growing forever. But for many, to even question growth is unthinkable: to do so is considered quite mad- Belief in endless growth is like a kink in the human brain.

Am I NIMBY? A huge housing estate has quadrupled the size of our village. Now I have 4X the traffic, it's no longer pleasant to sit outside in the morning due to noise & our bushland is gone... Population expansionism is of no benefit to me.
