Smitaroopa also developed a universal strategy to build sensors that can track multiple molecules simultaneously. The custom pH/H₂O₂ sensors developed using this method helped her uncover that H₂O₂ levels are higher in autolysosomes, not lysosomes, during autophagy.

3/ Why should we care? If microridges don’t form correctly, cells can't hold onto mucus, leaving tissues vulnerable—something seen in conditions like mucositis, dry-eye disease, and certain cancers.
