Pinning this to the top as I keep promising to share resources with our ACP and PA students
@BoltonUni
and then realising I tweet too much and the good stuff gets lost!
Genuine question if this is going to happen: why PAs?
As an ACP with over 15 years experience, a nurse prac qual, prescribing & MSc in emergency med, if I want to be a doctor I have to go to medical school.
It must be same standard for all & that standard is a medical degree.
"If we want to tackle the crisis in GP numbers, we should establish a pathway for physician associates to go on to train as doctors and for newly qualified doctors to go straight into five years’ training as GPs."
Delighted we’ve announced 5 new cutting edge

medical centres to open across UK next year. AI is crucial to the future of the NHS to speed up diagnoses, improve patient outcomes, make every £ go further & give clinicians more time with their patients

There you go MEN I fixed it for you.
MSc Emergency Medicine... completed it mate!
4 years of graft finally over, and a huge thanks to those who dragged me through it (you know who you are) plus the

teams.
Now celebrating with my body weight in pizza, cheers!
Disclaimer: To be very clear, I have no desire to be a doctor, or to go to medical school.
I’m just making a point that you can’t have some healthcare professionals who are allowed, and some who aren’t allowed, to skip doing the medical degree to become a doctor.
When someone says “other than knitting PPE there’s not much more we can do”...
#challengeaccepted
*disclaimer: I know this isn’t real PPE. I was trying to make my colleagues laugh, it’s needed. Don’t @ me. Go look at some penguin videos and calm down*
All those up top who make health service vs airline industry comparisons... one member of our cabin crew is injured so we’ve all been taken back to the terminal and nobody flies until we’re fully staffed.

Mum had to collect someone from ED this week. Despite everything I’ve been telling her for years she couldn’t believe how busy it was in the corridor & waiting room.
I worry we’ve been saying everything’s broken for ages so I don’t think the public really grasp how bad it is now
“ED staff are often tight knit, team oriented, and socialize across job titles. They value their team identity and count on each other to survive. They form close ties to their work friends.” 🙌🏼

As middle names go this has got a much better ring to it than Margaret....
thank you
@AmyOverend
you absolute beaut for making both mine and the postman’s day! Xx
As a band 5 staff nurse I was told by my matron that I’d “never get anywhere in this career” as I don’t “play the game”.
This came about after I told him it was unacceptable to make staff cry on the shop floor over ambulance handover times.

Thanks everyone for the lovely messages yesterday... not everyday an envelope like this lands through the door.
Equal parts overwhelmed, proud & nervous, but overall honoured to represent nursing &

F2: how come you’ve got a bleep?
Me: Its not mine it’s so the SHO can eat.
F2: wow! The teamwork down here is incredible. Everyone is so lovely & supportive & works so well together.
Out of the mouths of babes...
incredibly proud of

today, as every day.
@KirstyChallen
Our awesome post lady knocked on the door to ask for a plaster as someone else’s letter box attacked her “I thought you guys would be the best people to ask”.
A nurse & para in the same house you’d assume we are prepared for any emergency.
These are the only plasters I have.
Shout out to the only open takeaway on my way home who said “oh sorry we’re only open for delivery now” but recognised what must have been devastation in my eyes as he added “how about you sit in your car and order over the phone and I’ll deliver it to you”

Simulation isn’t just about blood and guts and fancy manikins!
Challenging those perceptions by designing and delivering scenarios with complex human factors including communication and overcoming safeguarding issues.

My favourite quote so far today from the boss: "look after yourselves, look after each other, look after your patients. If anyone tries to stop you, come to me".

Extremely exciting mail today sponsored by the official facial expression of “that’s my name in a thing!”
Huge thank you to

Today the pseudochild asked me why work was so stressful at the moment. Tried to explain current problems inc exit block. Actual words... “why don’t they just share the patients out across the hospital rather than keep them all in one place?”
Seriously. The 16 yr old gets it.
“Highly skilled & intelligent folk choosing not to work over their contracted hours as they will be financially penalised for it” there you are
@guardian
I fixed it for you.
Got chatting about changeover & one of our docs said “it’s not just that we’ve been together for 8 months...but we survived COVID together”. We don’t normally get to keep people this long & have had an absolutely cracking team. I’m going to be really sad in August.

We interrupt your day to bring you this incredibly important and exciting announcement.
***there is a new printer in majors***
Thank you for listening. That is all.
This is going to be another one of my rare serious threads, so feel free to ignore if you’re just here for the cat pictures (more of those soon)
Senior government ministers leaping to defend Dominic Cummings for breaking the government’s lockdown regulations is VERY dangerous
I feel a bit sorry for the people who think they shouldn’t wear a mask because it makes you hypoxic. They’re going to be really really upset when they find out that one of the treatments for hypoxia is a much bigger mask...
Twitter is starting to test the limits of my beta blockers. I officially no longer have the energy or inclination to argue. Consider this still my opinion.

Huge round of applause to consultants who start emails with

before asking if you remember a patient from a few years ago.
My blood pressure appreciates it 🥳
A year ago today
@ashleighlowther
rocked up at my house with a bottle of gin and a microphone decreeing “mate, I’ve decide we should do a podcast”. And so it began...
You know your docs know you too well when you’re telling them about a police officer who told a patient “no she’s only the nurse, she needs to get the doctor to prescribe your meds” and they interrupt with “oh my god are you about to tell me you assaulted a police officer?”

New signage is going up in the department... the one with me on is smaller than all the others. According to our housekeeper “yea yours is small and faulty. Dunno why”.
I think that’s actually quite appropriate.

Can we please move away from this knee-jerk reaction that if the system is failing those on the front line should just work harder and not have breaks, and perhaps move towards adequately staffing and fixing the bloody system????

These murders could have been avoided.
We must stand up for our communities by taking immediate action to ensure their safety is the top priority.
City Hall must cancel all police leave and implement a police surge to take back control of our streets.
After someone joked yesterday about the food received in ED and us being the size of a house post-COVID the amazing Paul from

@SimeLynn
Just seen post from one of our newly qual nurses (&a bloody good one) saying she’s not sure how long she can cope like this. breaks my ❤️ that despite excellent leadership we can’t fix everything.

look after the ones we already have!

After 5 years of faithful service and copious amounts of sleek its time to finally admit that I can’t hear a damn thing and retire my faithful raspberry Littmann that’s taken me from Sister to ENP to Nurse Clinician.
Luckily
@mswenman
has let me have my birthday pressie early!!
Scenes of actual carnage in the break room today as our two fabulous (southern) medical students-come-HCAs made the mistake of saying that mash doesn’t go on a roast dinner.
They then asked what the name for a [bread roll] is & I had to change the subject for their own safety.
There’s a special place in hell for people who overtake you when you pull over to let blue light vehicles pass (apologies to

who happened to be on hands free at the time and got the full “what the F are you F-ing doing you F-ing W” down her ear)

Pandemic aside... the fact that after 20 mins of rage i’ve still not managed to get this wool untangled says everything about why I would never make it in ITU (and why the ODPs try to stop me touching their machines)

Once upon a time I used to celebrate handing in assignments by going out and getting smashed.
Today I’m celebrating by taking this one to the park whilst listening to 80’s rock, then sitting down with a nice cup of tea. I’m not even sorry.
