āIt was evenly paced, so still. It was asking you to sit quiet & listen. Theyāre qualities that children need & donāt get any more.ā šÆ Good attention & listening skills are vital for all learning. Children cannot learn these skills using face-paced digital devices.

āStudents with no screen time in school perform best.ā @HP4SaferScreens @safe_screens
We need to be honest about the role of screens in schools. The evidence is becoming too strong to ignore. When daily screen time rises, achievement falls. The latest PISA data show a clear, consistent decline in scores as screen exposure increases. Students with no screen time in

We saw significant increases in children's screen time during the pandemic inc. in early years. Excessive use of screens in young children is associated with language delay & a 7.7 fold increased risk of ADHD in 5yo's using screens for more than 2hrs a day https://t.co/7xbJTTyH1E

Totally predictable & predicted. And we must remember the serious & long-term harms of these developmental delays on childrenās future academic achievement, mental health & life chances. They donāt simply ābounce backā.

ā”ļøāI think EdTech was peddled as a great thing, and now we are far too late realising it is actually an isolating, damaging force for childrenās learning and wellbeing.ā
Weāve written to @bphillipsonMP about serious child safeguarding & health concerns linked to school-issued 1:1 devices. Including the use of supposedly-filtered devices to access and share inappropriate content such as pornography, beheadings and shootings https://t.co/6mfyyp2BsP

Health professionals have added their voices to the growing chorus of parents, teachers, children, and experts calling on the government to stop sitting on its hands and finally get smartphones out of schools. Labour needs to get a grip.

The PM is wrong to call a phone ban in schools āunnecessaryā & wrong to say āthe reality of statistics is that the vast majority of schools already ban smartphones.ā They donāt. DfEās own data contradicts this. Labour must back our amendment to ban smartphones in schools.

There is more and more evidence that putting computers and tablets on students' desks (1:1 devices) was a terrible mistake. I agree with @AdamMGrant that "it's time to remove laptops [and tablets] from classrooms."
It's time to remove laptops from classrooms. 24 experiments: Students learn more and get better grades after taking notes by hand than typing. It's not just because they're less distractedāwriting enables deeper processing and more images. The pen is mightier than the keyboard.

I feel like a broken record. I agree with Bridget Phillipson, but her actions do not match her words. She can do more to stop this, but is failing to do so. Get smartphones out of schools & children off social media.

Other products carrying potential harm to children are regulated. Why not addictive smartphones?
Weāve sleepwalked into a world where kids are addicted to screens. In most other areas we apply the precautionary principle to protect children. Yet weāve handed them devices exposing them to porn, self-harm & bullying. Govt must ban phones in schools & get kids off social media

āA global study found that the more students use tech in schools, the worse their results.ā āThere is simply no independent evidence for the effectiveness of these tools ⦠what is happening is weāre experimenting on childrenā
How awkward... ā...almost all the research that has found benefits to introducing tech in classrooms is funded by the ed-tech industry, and most large-scale independent research has found that screen time gets in the way of achievement.ā @DanielKebedeNEU

The govāt have argued that there is not enough evidence of the harms of smartphones. We @HP4SaferScreens presented them with a briefing document full of evidence in Nov ā24 & there is now so much more. They must start putting children first.
This Labour Govt has FAILED to protect kids from smartphones. They whipped MPs to vote against school phone bans, gutted the Safer Phones Bill ā yet are happy to mandate smartphones for 13yoās. Whose interests are they really working for? Itās not childrenās, parents or families

Leaving aside concerns about facilitating a social credit system, as seen in China, this must be resisted on the simple ground that it is almost criminally blind to parent and teacher opinion on smartphones and devices. It would mandate smartphone ownership for kids at just the
