Poor behaviour is one of the biggest challenges in schools, yet Labour’s Schools Bill is silent on it. We must back teachers to maintain discipline, & children need to learn that actions have consequences. Ignoring it fails the 29 who want to learn & the 1 crying out for help.

Let me remind you what the Tory legacy is...phonics, a knowledge-rich curriculum & rigorous assessment. English pupils became the best at reading & maths in the Western world. Reforms other countries marvel at. Labour want to wreck it with no evidence it will improve schools.

Labour will never shirk the tough decisions needed for national renewal. We'll leave behind RAAC-free schools. Never let the Tories forget their legacy in education 👇

Children in Labour run Wales are being badly let down. They have “less chance of becoming literate than children in England.” This is what happens when you ignore the evidence of what works and pander to unions, a trap Bridget Phillipson seems determined to fall into too.

What is consigning them to the scrap heap is a lower level qualification. Are we really saying that white working-class children are less capable of achieving the same qualifications as their peers, or that the answer is to lower expectations? It’s an insult.

The Tories' policy of an endless cycle of resits consigned young people to the scrapheap. White working class pupils are twice as likely to need to resit. Labour is putting better support in place to give them the vital English & maths skills they need. https://t.co/T5FHF0w9zi

Bridget Phillipson has put pathetic ideology before pupils with her decision to pause a new Eton college in Middlesbrough. Middlesbrough’s most gifted but deprived children deserve better than this. I talk to the Teesside Gazette in my role as councillor on this shameful move.

No good blaming OBR for fiscal problems. Reeves took a big gamble by (1) saying tax rises not needed before election (2) leaving no headroom against fiscal rules at last Budget (3) saying she wouldn’t be back for more. Looks like gambles not paying off https://t.co/Tomrx6YUrA

We need to act to get children off social media, it’s normalising knives for young people and escalating conflicts in school, as we saw in this case.

We have put down amendments to the Schools Bill to create a clear presumption: bring a knife into school and you are out. Sexually assault someone and you’re out. This should not be controversial. Labour should put politics aside and back us.

Across the country, violence in schools is rising. Knives in classrooms, fights filmed and shared online. The two boys in this case had fallen out on social media just days before the killing. We must get smartphones out of schools and children off social media. Enough is

In London, Labour mayor, Sadiq Khan is urging schools to sign an “inclusion charter.” Inclusion must never come at the expense of safety. Parents must know their children are safe in school. It is not compasion to keep a child with a knife in class.

Schools should never be forced into keeping pupils who bring weapons on site. Exclusions exist to protect the safety and wellbeing of others. Failing to act puts everyone at risk. Labour do not agree, the local MP, Louise Haigh has argued against exclusions.

At the time, Sheffield Council was trying to reduce exclusions. Their own documents talk about “exclusion prevention” and “challenging academies on exclusion.” Discouraging exclusions is wrong-headed. It is not what’s right for other pupils in the class.

We need to be honest about the need for exclusions. This was an entirely preventable tragedy. There were clear warnings that this pupil should have been excluded and ignoring them had devastating consequences.

Children & teachers must feel safe at school. We should have a zero tolerance to knives in schools. In a split second it can change so many lives. Pushing zero exclusions is wrongheaded. Labour must back our amendments to the Schools Bill that means one knife and you’re out.

This is awful. Some Heads find themselves under intense pressure to avoid exclusion. Those pushing zero exclusions may mean well but ignore very real situations that sadly can happen. There has to be ZT to weapons in schools & PEX has to be the outcome. Then support can follow.

If you bring a knife/ axe or similar weapon to school, you should be permanently excluded. Anything less is a horrendous dereliction of the duty of care to the rest of the school community. It also teaches everyone else: bring in a weapon and you will be excluded. Not doing so
