Tired of people assuming that I don't sleep becuz our lab publishes 60+ papers/yr. Guess what: reason our lab kicks butt is becuz we DO sleep & have balance in our lives. More time DOESN'T = > "productivity". Failed relationships, depression & crappy parenting is NOT success.
Authorship is rarely straightforward in conservation science. Here we discuss why with a call to better acknowledge and reward diverse contributions beyond the usual things like collecting data, doing analysis or writing. A thread.

Now introducing Dr Andrea Reid
@andreajanereid
. Fresh out of an outstanding PhD defence on salmon, people and place. Indigenous scholarship at its finest.
Jeff Hutchings from
@DalScience
was wise, an exceptional listener & had ability to find order within complexity. He was champion 4 science & evidence-based policy. Jeff (gently) pushed the sci community to B bold & engage w decision makers, leading by example. He will B missed.
Almost too good 2 believe but apparently international grad students in Science at Carleton U will now be charged domestic tuition rate... This is huge! Means I can advertise globally 4 BEST candidates & do so knowing that I can afford them & they will not be swimming in debt.
I have $ for recent grads/post docs to analyze/write up interesting datasets related to env sociology / human dimensions of resource mgmt on a contractual basis. Does not require moving and cud be from anywhere. steven.cooke

Today was a good day - an emotional day - but a good one. I was inducted as a Fellow of the
@RSCTheAcademies
for which I am eternally grateful and humbled. But there is more to the story...
I'm new Editor in Chief of
@AmFisheriesSoc
@WileyEcolEvol
journal "Fisheries". It's perfect venue 4 short/punchy synthesis/perspective articles of broad interest. If u have ideas 4 articles ping me. We luv pics & color figs. 10K copies r mailed out monthly so big reach/impact!
I had 2 new (external) PhD students who accepted offers for Sept and then decided to do something else so I have last minute openings for 2 DOMESTIC PHD students. I can argue for outstanding international students but not with such a time frame (sorry). Ping me if u want to chat!
This fall I'll be inducted as Fellow of
@RSCTheAcademies
. I'm humbled & look 4ward 2 being active contributor. This is especially meaningful in that the late Jeff Hutchings was one of my nominators. I commit to carrying forward his commitment to evidence-based env mgmt & policy.
We have lost another giant in the fisheries science world. Dr. David L.G. Noakes has passed away. David was long-serving Editor-in-Chief of Env Biol of Fishes and a mentor to many from his days at Guelph & more recently Oregon State Univ. Charrs David... We will miss you.
Another thing that has come out of
#perchgate
&
#pruittdata
is need to tackle the issue of valuing "significant" findings. This requires culture change in the academy. How often have u heard a newbie student (or even seasoned pro) say "UNFORTUNATELY we didn't find signif results.
Journal of Fish Biology just asked us to add more ethics and animal care details to our paper. Ironically this is a CARCASS study where we looked at DEAD salmon to evaluate egg retention (pre spawn mortality). I guess we need to atone for these animals being semelparous. Sigh.
Wondering if any ecologists/biologists have ever had another scientist "call a species"... as in, telling U that U can't work on species X becuz they R. This happened 2 me but unsure how common it is... Oh... And my response was "FU" followed by doing great science on said spp.
The covid summer of bubbled science gave rise to Cooke family paper: Cooke, S.J., C.J.A. Cooke, J.T.H. Cooke, B.W.C. Cooke +
@FishForward
+
@sci_angler
. Efficacy of dehooking tools for the removal of hooks from the jaw region of angled fish. Coming out in Fisheries Research.
We have "normalized" including $ for art and design within the grants we apply for. This past yr our lab spent $15K+ on graphic design, fine arts, video production, photography, story boards, and animated shorts. A powerful way to increase the impact of the work we do.
Research impact is not (just) about publications but rather the ways that work is used... FINALLY we have a decent tool to quickly collate some indicators of research impact on public policy! This will be SUPER helpful for grants, awards, T&P, etc.
We have lost a giant in freshwater sci world. Olaf Weyl from
@NRF_SAIAB
in S Africa was expert in biol invasions, inland fisheries & FW biodiv. He was involved in MANY global initiatives incl

@AFL_org
& a friend to many. Thinking of his partner & kids. A v sad day.
Over the years I have written a few papers that are a cross between a rant and a plea... There is a common theme - They all involve attempts to address dumb stuff happening to freshwater ecosystems. In this thread I collate those rants ;)
Face palm... Why is the default request from anglers to stock fish to address any fisheries management issue? How about restoring habitat or using fisheries management regulations that do not lead to an overfished state?
Tired of having to argue with grad studies/admissions re why marks are poor predictor of grad student success. We (our lab) interview students and weigh LOTS of things in selecting the team members that best fit a given project... and often marks are irrelevant.
We are hiring an MSc or PhD level Research Associate (or Post Doc) in the realm of applied fish ecology & evidence sythesis... Join our Fish Ecology lab at

Today Canada banned 1500+ assault-style weapons. One can be pro hunting and support responsible gun ownership but also be utterly opposed to public ownership of killing machines. That is me. And I have never been prouder 2 B Canadian.
Ever heard of micro fishing? Yes... that TINY thing in the mouth of that TINY fish is a hook! In this paper we provide an overview of micro fishing... What is it, sci needs, mgmt questions, etc. PC. Tim Aldridge.
I attempted to do editor duties tonight and felt too guilty inviting referees (from around the world) so just logged out... Seems insensitive/rude to be inviting people who are dealing with extreme anxiety.
Latest science from Cooke family covid bubble w them as coauthors. Hoping this is the last one... I LOVE my kidz but lab students r less likely to fall overboard, cry over my snack choices, or fight over the color of maggots we use 4 bait.
@SMWadgymar
We had "fluid shits" rather than "fluid shifts" make it past 4 co-authors, an editor, handling editor, 3 referees and technical editor and into a respected peer reviewed journal. I guess shit happens... ;)
Academics r a conflicted bunch... We criticize those who don't publish enuf vs too much, those who don't do
#scicomm
vs too much, those who engage in soc justice issues vs not. I cud go on. For group so concerned w "academic freedom" we r very judgmental.

Thinking about "micro-fishing" as an emerging issue 4 recreational fisheries mgmt & biodiversity conserv. I had 2 purchase a Tenkara rod to do some pilot research... Micro-fishing = targeting super tiny fish like this. It is tough to keep up with creative angling innovations!
So tired of seeing photos like this... If the fish are soo tired that you can hold four of them at a time then they are on deaths doorstep. A healthy bass is soo lively that it takes every bit of strength one has to hold it.
For last decade I've heard reports of anglers pouring carbonated beverages on fish they catch 2 stop the bleeding so they can be released. With some encouragement from local anglers
@attrahan
& our team studied this intervention to see if it worked...
Each year I spend many hours snorkeling shorelines for our fish research. Every time I approach a dock I do so with major trepidation. It is a well known fact that Satan lurks in the shadows of every dock. Confirmed again yesterday. This time Satan was disguised as a beaver.
Looking for PhD students interesting in linking fish health & condition (via genomics) to behave/fitness outcomes (via telemetry)! Opp to collab w lots of dif labs & partners. Contact if interested! steven.cooke

Image of a professional angler using an underwater fish viewer to target nesting bass. YES I have several issues with this even if it is legal in NY where this event took place. This is NOT what responsible fishing looks like and is not what pros shud be modeling for the masses.
Fishing tournaments use a public resource. When we as scientists request permission to sample and tag fish as part of such processes but are denied access by the organizer it tells me that they are an organization that does not truly care about fish and fisheries.
Email from undergrad today: "...I just wanted to say how great of a job you did with the course... I think other professors could take some notes on how you interact with your students." Simple formula - be human - authentic, passionate, compassionate, respectful & supportive.
Congrats to Jill Brooks
@jillbrooks85
for submitting her 438 page (!!!) PhD thesis to the examining committee. An impressive body of work by an outstanding scientist, mentor to many, and all around champion for fish (especially sharks!), women in science and conservation.
We just relaunched the
@KeepFishWet
website. Become an advocate for better fish handling. Science-based & angler-tested handling & release strategies that keep released fish alive.
I am blushing from referee comment: "In 30+ years of reviewing papers, I've rarely said "Publish as is", but this is one of those instances". Note to self... do NOT get used to referee comments like this - I'm sure the next will be a brutal reject with full smackdown.
Today bass season opened in eastern ON BUT our snorkeling has revealed that most daddy bass R still engaged in parental care. As such - I sat this one out. The BEST way to ensure we have self-sustaining wild fish populations is to NOT mess with fish when they are in the bedroom.
Are fisheries managers ready for angler use of electronic lures, drones, next gen fish finders, novel fish attracting chemicals + more? Just accepted: Tech innovations in the recreational fishing sector: implications for fisheries mgmt & policy. IN

I feel like academic conferences are increasingly creeping into weekends with the argument that it doesn't interfere with teaching... I can always find someone to teach a class I miss but I can't get someone to serve as a surrogate parent or partner...

Covid snuck into our home for 2nd time this fall -this time the kiddo I really didn't want to get it because of past viral-induced brain injury. Avoidance seems futile without being total hermit given almost all precautions have evaporated. Numb. Frustrated. Exhausted. Angry.
I have perma smile - another pregnant colleague/friend/collaborator. Academics and ECRs can have kids... this is not a myth. And we will support u (including by recognizing that a career interruption is inevitable) and rallying for u when it comes to T&P, hiring, awards, etc.
I am thankful for being a father. It has made me a far more compassionate mentor and supervisor. The stuff my peeps have to deal with is so emotionally draining. Here is to all the early career researchers trying to do science in the face of the good and bad curve balls.
I am looking for a few PhD students. Here R some details. MUST be CDN citizen or resident given timeline/funding (SORRY). Sept or Jan start.Topics = conservation physiology of imperiled fishes; effects of hypoxia on fish behaviour; movement of river fish; evidence-based decisions
We did it! Thanks to a great team of editors Fangue, Farrell, Brauner & Eliason + MANY authors our 2 book series (Vol 39A/B) of the famed Fish Physiology Series is DONE. All about conservation physiology of fishes - systems, issues and applications. Cover pics by
@FishNeedLove2
It's official... I am considering Frontiers in ... journals to all be predatory and will no longer be publishing there. The RIDICULOUS and UNRELENTING invitations to review reveal utter incompetence. When u have tens of thousands of editors u don't need referees anyways.
Who else in Canada downloads the full federal budget (every time) and then searches for terms like conservation, evidence, NSERC, science, research, freshwater, fish, great lakes and training? Asking for a friend... ;)

We did it! A full school year of online learning with 3 kiddos. I was tech guru, short order cook, crafting apprentice (glitter specialty), cheerleader & phys ed instructor. I am closer to my kids for it...
Lots of chatter (+ some actions) about paying grad students fairly (compensation is brutal). Focus has been on increasing total pay (which I support) but there has been less discussion re tuition creep. Eliminating tuition for grad students would put real $ in their pockets.
Some call this habitat enhancement or restoration... we call it littering. Here is our take on the practice of using PVC pipe + other plastics in FW systems. We can & must do better - our FW ecosystems deserve it!
@scas_scsa
@KirkwoodLab
Twitter gets u cited. I am revising a paper and yesterday I saw an author announce a new paper they published on Twitter. I cited it in several papers and it helps to address a specific referee critique. I'm pretty good with search engines but unlikely I wud have found this one.
Just wrote an email to our lab team reconciling our recent Highly Cited Research achievement with the flawed Nature Comms paper and what impact really is! I am keen to use my position of privilege & leadership (including w
@RSCTheAcademies

My career in environmental science started by working seasonally for 5 yrs at one of the Conservation Authorities in ON (

Discovery Grant to understand and better manage the intersection of fisheries effects, fish and fisheries' responses to climate change, and conservation strategies.
If U do work in the conservation sci, fish ecology, aquatic sci, animal behave or physiol ecology space and are looking for someone to suggest for letter writer for tenure or promotion, I am willing and able to do so. I am fair, supportive & luv to be cheerleader for others.
Need to acknowledge my kids in paper we are working on but also need to be honest... They have agreed to the following text: "Cameron, Joshua, and Benjamin Cooke provided somewhat helpful field assistance and elevated morale among other team members."
Proud of
@attrahan
for submitting her first MSc paper to a journal today. She did the FIRST study to determine if pouring carbonated beverages stops bleeding of fish intended for release. Stay tuned - but in the meantime - I would pour it down my throat instead of on fish!
