Gutted by this news. Karsten was a mentor, a coauthor, a family friend, an inspiration, and a transformative visionary for a better world. While the world got dimmer with his passing - his dream of wild, connected spaces will shine brightly forever.
Karsten Heuer was a biologist, wildlife & landscape defender, storyteller, husband, father, son and friend, & will be greatly missed by many. All of us at Y2Y are saddened to lose an inspirational leader, champion of our cause & a great friend.

An incredible day to celebrate @MelanieDickie and her accomplishments in wildlife restoration. In a mere 1771 days as a PhD student, she knocked out more than 20 papers, won a researcher of the year award, and taught me how to bead friendship bracelets. The Mel #Eras tour rocks!
Today I defended my thesis and am now Dr. Melanie Dickie 🎉 I am so grateful for the support of so many great and brilliant people in my life

Great to see how the USA invests in safer roads for people and wildlife!. PSA -> Hopefully Secretary Pete is gesturing at the fence, which help reduce wildlife-vehicle collisions by close to 90% in other areas. The wildlife overpass is for connectivity.
Some of the most interesting projects you may not have heard about are our investments in crash prevention via wildlife crossings.

So true - our project - the largest cougar project in BC's history, would not exist without in kind support from the hounds and their handlers. This project only happens if people from very diverse backgrounds get along . and they do!.
The same with cougar research and science. The same houndsmen/woman who the author vilifies are the first people donating their time and expertise to help catch, collar and monitor cougars to improve our understanding.

In 1896, the #Dodgers were named after trolley dodging baseball fans. In 2024, staff in the #WiRELab are currently reviewing and analyzing data on railroad-caused wildlife mortalities. Is the #WorldSeries a portend of how important railways are for wildlife conservation?

But did they change rivers?
Contrary to the common narrative that prey behavioral response to predation risk is a key driver of ecological change, we found that elk browsing pressure and aspen tree regeneration in northern Yellowstone National Park were largely unaffected by wolf predation risk.
