#LostSharks | Day 2. The Paddlenose Spookfish (Rhinochimaera africana) was the first species Dr. Dave Ebert ever described — discovered in 1986 off Doring Bay, SA, and named in 1990. It had been misidentified as a more common species until studied closely.

Big congratulations to NRF-SAIAB PhD student Nichole Donough (NWU) for winning Best Student Oral Presentation at #SASAqS2025! . She used parasite profiles as “fingerprints” to tell killifish species apart and explored their role in temporary ecosystems.
