This came up in re: To Kill a Mockingbird, but is valid generally: If you see an 8th grade syllabus fave that appears to have major cultural influence, assume the author was a clever opportunist who tapped into some heavy zeitgeist. Do NOT assume that author changed the world.

I like Steve but the irony here is rich. Misusing the term “blood libel” is not a good way to argue against misuse of the term “genocide”.
I explain why the accusation that Israel is committing "genocide" is blood libel. Me: The application of the word genocide to refer to tens of thousands of war deaths is, I mean, I think it is a kind of blood libel. It's trying to import the moral opprobrium that we associate

I am reminded of a Donald Deye joke: “About 80% of cases of chronic dermatographic urticaria are idiopathic, and the itch to keep asking what caused them does not resolve even after you’ve successfully treated the hives.”
@SeedOilDsrspctr Doctor here. No point discussing it because a) they lack the base knowledge required to fully understand the root causes b) it's irrelevant to the treatment and symptom relief in the acute phase c) despite counseling they remain noncompliant and continue the pattern of behaviors

“Stalin’s partridge hunt” grade material here.
@punishablepress This girl will be traumatized from this experience. My daughter (10 at the time) was approached by 3 boys at the school playground summer 2022. Here's the story as I wrote it then: Elyse came home visibly upset last night. And as she told her story, she began to cry. She’d

There isn’t a meme from when Salieri watches Mozart effortlessly improve his welcome march in front of the emperor and god, but oh man Hillary right now. This was her dream.
Pakistan PM: I would like to nominate this great president for the Nobel peace prize. Because I genuinely feel that he is the most genuine and most wonderful candidate… I think that you are the man this world needed most at this point in time. The world will always remember you

Recently, I spoke about the growing influence of Westernization in Kashmir and today, it’s visible more than ever. An educational event brought outsiders, and seeing Kashmiri girls openly hugging non-mahrams is deeply disheartening. Astaghfirullah we’re losing our values !

Because they can’t strike, cops deal with potential bad news by threatening to quit. But when the trigger event happens they usually tell themselves it’s *even better* to protest by staying on the job but doing as little as possible. Yeah, that’ll really show the Zohran.
“It’s shaken me to my core,” a lieutenant said of Mamdani’s unexpected victory in June. “The absolute dread I feel is palpable.”

This dude’s my size so I’m not mocking him, but you ever notice how NFL head coaches are well below the height and weight you would expect based on, say, player averages from 20 years ago?
Dolphins HC Mike McDaniel on his message to try to keep everybody together: “I think it’s pretty simple — that sucks … I’m not worried about the team staying together, I’m worried about us getting our football right.“ Mentioned it’s their 4th game this year that they lost in

The justice system depends on two separate but equally important groups: officials who gather the abundant and super obvious clues to a criminal’s guilt, and the curly wolves inside our prisons who will bravely keister a shank to put a buck fifty on an SOS chester.

I’m a former libertarian, current rw lunatic but this is silly. A fair experiment would be, at min: 1) You can’t legalize *all* crime. 2) You can’t *pay* junkies to do junk. (Portland did both) 3) You need enough trial sites not to concentrate a nation of junkies in one town.
The North American experiment in drug decriminalization has been an abject failure. Everywhere this was tried, it failed, and the result convinced a lot of my libertarian friends to become considerably more paternalistic in the process.

The big news here is you only gain a .039 advantage by escalating from barstool to blade.

This is wrong. Boys Don’t Cry was a very good movie about mental illness, which was also well ahead of its time in seeing the despair of the white lower class.
@Variety In 1999, Hollywood said this was the greatest film ever made. It certainly started selling Trans ideology. It’s what they do.

I’d do it for free just to put on my best Phil Hartmann and say “Now this is something the other teachers won’t tell you…”
All 50 states would block @elonmusk from teaching a high-school physics class because he doesn’t have an arbitrary government-issued "teaching certificate." We’ve got professionals and retirees in all 50 states—engineers who built bridges, pilots who’ve flown across the world,

I remember even that notable non hysteric Tina Fey succumbed to the saturation coverage, saying “If another man with an $8 haircut tries to tell me what rape is, I’m gonna lose it.” I remember thinking wait, has that happened more than once? No, just seemed like it after while.
I don’t like this ultra high perishability, 1 week ‘current thing’ meme cycle culture which now has us all in its grip. But take a moment to remember how much it sucked to live in the world of 2012, when major questions like control of the Senate turned on non-events like “some

I have no idea why John Candy is trending, but it always seemed interesting that his cocaine problem was kept a secret from the vast majority of Americans when he dropped dead at 44. Why did the media treat him so differently from Belushi 12 years earlier & Farley 3 years later?
