These Chinese fishing vessels all going dark occurred during China's massive maritime exercises. No reason to assume this was a coincidence, as these boats have been used in invasion exercises in the past.
Thousands of Chinese vessels flipped their AIS to ghost mode overnight. Call it what you want, but “China’s vanishing vessels” feels about right.
