There may be a serious security flaw at @FifthThird. For over a year, my mother’s account has been locked out monthly due to failed access attempts—not from her, but from someone using her Social Security Number. The bank knows. They’ve done nothing. @CFPBWatch @CFPB.

@FifthThird @CFPBWATCH that there was nothing the bank can do but she could report it to the government herself. So she’s currently unable to access her money from anything other than going to the bank herself and dealing with her personal banker. This is completely unacceptable @FifthThird, @CFPBWATCH.

@FifthThird, @CFPBWATCH This issue for a short period seemed to be resolved but today my mother called me about her account being locked once again. She told the customer service rep that the bank is responsible for contacting the government and the customer service rep said.

My mother is 80 years old. She shouldn’t have to call the bank and reset her Genie Card every single month just to pay her bills. This isn’t user error. This is a security failure that @FifthThird refuses to fix.

A bank employee showed us the login logs. That’s how we found out her SSN was being used in the failed attempts. Not her username. Not a password. Just the SSN triggering a lockout—month after month.

Every month, she logs in to pay her bills. And every month, her account is locked because of “too many failed login attempts.”. We were told by a bank employee that the attempts weren’t using her username—they were using her SSN.
