Critical research confirms what debt advisers have long known - too many people get trapped in IVAs after incorrect, misleading advice. The impact on their lives can be devastating - people in debt crisis deserve so much better.

This will make a massive difference to so many people - brilliant to see @TulipSiddiq and @hmtreasury move swiftly to get urgently needed protections in place. To echo one of our debt advisers here, "The sooner these regulations come in the better." https://t.co/PK0VtwA0Bq

There's much to welcome in the #Rentersrightsbill But it's not ‘job done’ The “no fault” eviction ban must be enforced & it’s crucial renters see support for housing costs in the upcoming #budget As the Bill is debated in the Commons here are 3 key things Govt. must do🧵

💸Nearly £2bn in financial support for bills is going unclaimed, as poorly designed social tariffs keep people in the dark. Many low-income households could be missing out on savings of £350 a year.

Latest figures showing the continuation of rocketing rents come as no surprise @CitizensAdvice - in the past year we’ve seen a 107% rise in private renters coming to us for help with rent increases🧵
Rent rises continue at near record levels, though a touch down from peak - up 8.4% on average in year to August, up 9.9% in N Ireland, 9.6% in London. Average rent in GB now £1,286 a month, £2,129 in London

Is the cost of living crisis over? No. Millions of households are having to choose which essential to cut. Social tariff schemes exist to help but they aren't working. Really excited to be working with @IPPR, @policy_practice and @finan_fairness to look at how we fix this.
We’ve found that nearly 8 million people have fallen behind on one of their essential bills including energy, water, broadband or car insurance bills in the past year alone. Today we’re launching a new project to look at how to fix this ⤵️

Definitely. Also critical: it shows the risk of bad landlords cheating the new rules: shocking that for 1 in 5 renters evicted by a landlord who said they intended to sell, the property was not ultimately sold. The #RentersRightsBill must get evidence + enforcement right.
This is a fascinating report that makes clear that the 2016 overhaul of the Scottish private rented sector has benefited tenants north of the border without adversely affecting landlords.

Renters can't wait any longer. We’re helping almost 100 people every day with no-fault Section 21 evictions and almost 400 people with homelessness. We’re looking forward to seeing the Bill in full and working with Government to ensure the bill hits the mark (5/5)

3) Does it give renters the security to build their lives? 🏡 Renters deserve to put down roots. As minimum that means an initial 2 yr protection period from landlords evicting to sell or move in, and a 4 month notice to find a new home if landlords evict down the line. (4/5)

2) Will it protect against rent hikes being used as backdoor S21? 💰 ...and ensuring unfair rent hikes aren't used to force tenants out. Renters need better protection and ways to push back - at very least stopping tribunals raising rent above the amount being challenged. (3/5)

1) Does it provide a *watertight* ban on no-fault evictions? 🔒 We need to close *all* loopholes. That means strong, enforced evidence rules and a 1 year re-let ban to prevent rogue landlords lying about selling or moving in... (2/5)

The Government is creating a #FairWorkAgency (FWA) to enforce rights at work. But how can it ensure the FWA delivers for the most vulnerable workers, many of whom come to @CitizensAdvice for help? 🧵 1/ https://t.co/LLgBZu8sCx

“If you’re a renter, you’re only ever two paychecks away from being homeless.” Hayley* who came to @CitizensAdvice after being served a S21 eviction notice 🧵
⚠️ Our new report looks into into the reality facing private renters: - 45% living with damp, cold or mould - 39% have cut down on basics like heating + eating to pay rent - 1 in 3 who faced disrepair didn't complain, many for fear of eviction (1 / 4)
