My DMs are always open for support. If anyone needs to chat/vent/figure things out, i will always listen. Part of my role is being an SEMH mentor & I'm MHFA trained.
A light weight can feel heavy and uncomfortable if you hold on to it for too long. It's okay to not be okay.
PE teachers - can we PLEASE stop with the 'food challenge' resources? Getting kids to build a meal, ount the calories and then figure out how much exercise is needed to burn it all off is extremely triggering and can push people towards an unhealthy relationship with food.
Please don't engage with that vile, hateful woman who has decided to attack teachers this evening. She does this just to get clicks. It's how she earns her money. Just ignore her. Don't reply, don't retweet. Don't even say her name.
I've said it numerous times, but PLEASE stop using the term OCD so casually. No, liking things in order or tidy is not a cute OCD trait. OCD is a serious mental illness with obsessive, intrusive thoughts and compulsive behaviours. It can be completely debilitating. Just stop it.
Thinking ahead to September and the new year 7 cohort - they won't have had a full year of in class learning since year 4...secondary school is a big transition at the best of times, but this is going to be huge for them.
If your DSL doesn't cover Incels in their September inset safeguarding session, pull them up on it and ask them why not. All staff need to be fully informed so these misogynistic attitudes can be challenged and changed.
So one of our Yr7s has put together a PDF of research into Covid-19. He has then emailed it to two of the leading professors at Cambridge who are carrying out research into the virus. He said he wanted to do his bit to "serve humanity" and i have to say, i respect the audacity.
Jurassic Park is 27 years old and still looks incredible. Mainly because they actually made that massive T-Rex. A guy would sit inside it to control it. They said when it got wet it would randomly start moving and scare the life out of everyone 😂
Should schools weigh pupils to make sure they shift the pounds they've put on during the lockdown?
Health experts want two weigh-ins in September and then in the spring to keep kids on track. But could this just create a generation of calorie counters?

Today has been a day that i don't think i will shake off for quite some time. It astounds me how kids manage to keep going. The disclosures made today, that span almost their entire life, have broken my heart.
I love this job, but man it's tough.
Every dealer I've ever known (not as a customer lol) has been white. Pubs full of white lads openly offering you coke in the toilet. Lad at uni used to go to Brum and come back to Stoke on the train with a backpack full of weed. Never stopped once.
Priti Patel once said she wants people who break the law to feel 'terror', but when she and Boris Johnson break the law, the answer is to simply change the law.

This is Islamophobia, dressed up in a moral panic which is shown in a lot if the quotes/replies.
Giving students a place to pray, no matter their faith, isn't difficult. If you can run a club at lunchtime you can run a multi faith prayer room. Really is that simple.

4 years ago today school closed. We had no idea when it would open again. Kids missed out on exams, last day celebrations, prom...
Looking back on that time, it is almost surreal. Everyone within education did an incredible job.
"make friends with the cleaners/cooks" surely that's expected? Is it needed as advice? It makes me feel uneasy & i can't quite articulate why. I think it's a class thing maybe. When I first starter working in schools a cleaner called me "Sir" & I felt horrible. Embarrassed.
I was speaking to a 6th former today and it went like this:
S: I love listening to old music
Me: Oh really? Who do you listen to?
S: Beyonce, Nelly...
Me: 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
I thought she was going to say she listened to Motown or stuff from the 80s. I'm not ready for this
Earlier in the year i saw a girl from a local school upset while i was walking to school. She said a man had just approached/followed her. She was scared as she was disabled & can't walk quickly. I walked her most of the way to school & explained my role in school. /1
Today i got a call from a local service that provides MH support to students. I gave my name & the lady said "are you the man that helped my daughter?"
It was her mom! It was such a strange coincidence. We're all far more connected than we realise sometimes!
A HoY position should not be seen as just a step up the ladder. You have to have a passion for relationship building and pupil welfare. Some of the conversations i hear from staff that then want to apply for positions astounds me.
Today was a day i hope i never have to live through again.
I'm going to be away from here for a bit as i need some time to process what has happened, so i apologise if i don't get back to anyone.
Back to school tomorrow as paternity leave comes to an end. Had 3 weeks at home with this little one which has been a blessing. He arrived early meaning we also got 1 week of the Christmas holidays to be together as a family of 5 as well.
❤️
Interviewing for a pastoral position today. 5 invited - 2 declined, 1 pulled out last night, 1 got mom to call in this morning to say they weren't coming and the last one turned up an hour late.
Never known anything like it 🤦♂️
Good luck to all those going back to school tomorrow! I have another couple of weeks off now as my paternity leave starts! Baby

, a beautiful baby boy, arrived on January 2nd at 12:19am. The kids are absolutely besotted with him!
I know there are concerns, but please don't do a reactionary assembly on AT. The issue is much, much deeper than that. It is something that is going to take a lot of time.
There is a danger that we do a few assemblies, tell the kids to keep away & then think the job is done. /1
2020 has been pretty awful BUT lockdown did force me to set this account up. Over the last 8/9 months I've made more connections than i could've ever imagined & i know some are blossoming into genuine friendship. It's truly been a blessing. Happy new year everyone 🎊🎉🙌
A student that left yr 13 last year came back in for a chat today. It's the 2nd time they've been back since starting Uni. Spent 2 hours giving them space to vent, then they saw another member of staff for an hour. Care & support doesn't have to be cut off the day they leave.
It's encouraging to see my article is in the top 10 most read again. We need more awareness. This is something that absolutely has to be tackled & staff need to pay particular attention to the words students are using when we return in September.
@JMoncktonSmith
"May" is doing some incredibly heavy lifting. Sadly pshe/sex ed has become the latest culture war, with some prominent accounts thinking staff are encouraging 11 year olds to have anal sex in school. There is no evidence of schools actually covering this stuff.
Had to deal with an incident today & check some phones - for anyone else that has to do this, you all know about the secret calculator 'vault' apps, right? Looks like a calculator, works like a calculator, but if you put in a pin & press % it opens up to saved files, pics etc.
Had one of those safeguarding calls today that just makes you sit back and let out a massive sigh after hanging up. Worst thing is, despite how bad it was, I'm left wondering if it will even pass threshold. The bar is just SO high right now.
Pretty poor this. I know the idea is comedy, but reinforcing stereotypes like this of non teaching staff can be so damaging. Non teaching pastoral staff can end up dealing with the most horrific things, for the worst pay. They're highly skilled in what they do.
My little girl is 4 today! She is so smart, funny and caring. It amazes me to think back to her traumatic birth, the 5 days she spent in NICU... To see her doing so well is a blessing.
I can't get Lee, his family and his school community off my mind. The volume of this targeted abuse is appalling. Let's not forget that the far right literally murdered an MP - this goes way beyond trolling or having a different opinion. It's really worrying.
Just a reminder - Blue Monday isn't real. It was created as a marketing strategy to sell more holidays. Depression doesn't decide to make itself worse on a particular day of the year. It trivialises mental illness.
It might not seem like a lot to many, but the post below was the culmination of 15 sessions of CBT. I've always struggled with self esteem & would never take/post a selfie. I spent 40mins in 1 session trying to take one. CBT doesn't work for everyone but it has helped me a lot /1
My 3yo son is a pain when it comes to eating. Really picky. Just googled some ideas and the first idea i saw, in an article for ideas to get fussy kids to eat, was "crumbed fish with dill, lemon and cucumber yoghurt."
Immediately closed the article.
The sector is still reeling from a HT suicide, fuelled by harsh judgements of the school.
At the same time, a HT tweets a picture of a corridor that in 24hrs has had 1m views, over 800 comments. All sorts of horrible accusations/comments.
Do we only care when it's too late?
It's our 4 year wedding anniversary today! We're packing up the car and heading down to Portsmouth with the kids for a couple of days. Any recommendations for what to do while we're down there?
This 👇
Try sitting with a child for hours as they open up for the first time in their life, describing a lifetime of horrific sexual, physical and emotional abuse.
Trying to call mask wearing child abuse is just so disgustingly offensive to kids that have actually suffered.
Recent and past child abuse cases are seared painfully into my memory. What these children were subjected to is beyond heartbreaking. Anyone who calls masks ‘child abuse’ to be emotive are just absolute scum. Child abuse is not something to be weaponised to fit a discourse.
Just noticed that I've just passed 3000 followers 😳 i only set this up during lockdown and I'm not quite sure why so many people have decided to follow me, but thank you!! 😊😊

can be an amazing place full of bright ideas and wonderful support.

A week ago today i got into school & was given the news that one of our students had passed away the night before. It was probably the worst day of my life. The stunned silence mixed with screaming/crying as we told the yr group has kept me up at night. /1
Today was a day i hope i never have to live through again.
I'm going to be away from here for a bit as i need some time to process what has happened, so i apologise if i don't get back to anyone.
I really worry about this creeping opposition to anything that seems to resemble compassion. A kid seemed to be crying over nothing once. A few conversations later & it turned out they had been sexually abused for the majority of their life.
Trauma etc. Shouldn’t we be making children ‘anti fragile’? Increasingly I see kids crying over nothing, instantly saying they’re ’having a bad day’. I think they’re playing us. The ‘safeguarding’ agenda taken over so much that adults panic/appease at 1st sign a child is unhappy.
@DrJessTaylor
My ultimate favourite is when a bloke questions a woman's interpretation of something by saying "i don't think you read it/understood it properly"
Then the woman replies with "I AM THE AUTHOR!" 😂😂
It's so amazing following the
#edudate
threads and seeing everyone so excited about their dates. I definitely feel like I'm missing out 😂 anyone want to start something for married people? (just to make friends, not to arrange affairs😂)

@missvlbishop
"you've rumbled us... She's actually a very smart 16 year old we employed because we can pay £3 p/h!"
What did they actually expect!? 🤦♂️
Currently in a bit of a back & forth on tiktok with a trainee. Apparently has SLT support to film in the classroom. "Took steps to protect himself & students" but it took 15 seconds on google to find the school he is in.
Leaders...why in the world are you allowing this?!
I'm losing the patience to be polite with people that are doing this. The classroom is not a content factory for your channel. I think ppl know it will get likes/views so do without thinking about the potential issues. Put the kids above your selfish influencer dreams.
I try to keep out of most debates but i couldn't stay quiet this time. Sexual harassment & assault can happen and will happen anywhere. No matter how much faith you have in the people around you, it's incredibly dangerous to assume these things will never happen.
Over coming low self esteem is so difficult. When someone says something nice on here, my first thought is "they must be making that up. They're just doing it to be kind."
If someone tags me in something, i assume it was a mistake, so i worry about answering & looking silly.
Me and my wife have been together 12 years today 😮😮😮
A lot has changed from those days in the Students Union 😂
4 years ago today we were in Rome - wife was so ill on the plane they nearly made an emergency landing - found out she was pregnant with our first child! Lol
Pregnancy and child birth. HOW IS A BABY IN THERE AND THEN IT'S OUT AND A LITTLE HUMAN!?!
For weeks after both my kids were born i would hold them up to my wife and say "how the hell... How were they in there!?"
I mean, i understand it...but it blows my mind 😂
Also a huge good luck to the trainee teachers out there that might be going into their placement school in person for the first time!
You've got this 🙌
I always want to comment when I see ppl worrying about their calorie count/how much they've burnt off etc. I want to tell them to just ignore it all - exercise for the enjoyment. Eat what you want. But i feel it's not my place to do that. Upsets me seeing ppl worry so much tho.
It has been a particularly rough couple of days on here. Sending solidarity and strength to my Muslim friends. Islamophobia is rampant and shows no signs of slowing down. It needs all of us to call it out as often as we can if we have any hope of making a difference.
When we see acts of femicide like in Croydon this morning, we can't overlook the influencers that are literally brainwashing young boys (&men) online. I'm sure they are not the entire reason this incident happened, but they perpetuate culture of dominance & hatred of women.
It's only Wednesday and this week has been so draining 😩
Someone asked earlier if i enjoyed my job. 'enjoy' isn't the right word. How can i enjoy kids opening up about DV, sexual assault, eating disorders, self harm, bereavement... But i wouldn't want to do anything else.
This is so ridiculous. He is still in very good shape on the right. I guarantee he is happier than the pic on the left. Ppl don't understand what it takes for that on the left. It's why disordered eating is becoming more common in young lads.
Had my 3rd therapy session today & it was a pretty intense one. Spent a lot of time looking back at childhood experiences & talked about things I'd never talked about before.
Uncomfortable, but definitely worth doing. Still a long way to go but I'm on the right path.
Seriously though, there must be something in the water or something. This week has easily been the worst week ever for high level incidents. It has been relentless.
Well done to every DSL and pastoral lead this week. If mine is anything to go by you will have had it hard. Time to switch off, enjoy the weekend and start again Monday.
END OF TERM!! 🎊🎊🙌🙌
I didn't think we were gonna make it 🥺
Supposed to have a training day tomorrow but it's now a 'work from home cpd' 😉 day due to getting through Ofsted this week! Much needed!!!
You know them days where your plans just go out the window and you're dealing with a conveyor belt of issues and that conveyor belt still keeps bringing new issues even after school ends...yeah. It's been one of them 😫😫😫
Following a tweet yesterday I've seen a few ppl say that they never get any interactions on their tweets. You have to build a network. This means replying to tweets, engaging with hashtags etc. Otherwise, the algorithms won't prioritise you & people won't see you! I
10 hours later and an 'anonymous' page STILL has a post up which names the poster. I feel awful for that person. I'm hoping they've not seen it, because if they have they must be absolutely sick with worry.
Shameful behaviour from the anonymous page. Implications could be huge.
@WhistleblowingT
@adamboxer1
If their attendance is below 60% the incentive of a certificate isn't going to change things. There are obviously issues that need addressing with support from outside agencies.
Why does the prospect of this make me feel sick!? I hate any pictures of me, but here i am 😂 let's see how long this lasts before i scurry back off to anonymity again 😂
#NewProfilePic
Was at The Bodyguard in Manchester last night. It was made clear that you should not sing along. Sadly a few didn't want to listen and almost ruined the final song. It's not karaoke, people pay good money to see the professionals perform. It's not difficult to sit quietly.
Can't believe i have to say this:
School's - please don't upload indecent images to CPOMS. Then transfer that file to another school.
It is quite literally illegal.
🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️
See lots of videos of teachers stumbling over words etc when recording lessons. Don't get frustrated & do multiple takes, just roll with it! You wouldn't start a lesson again in person. Don't cause more work & stress for yourself! The kids just need you, not perfection!
Saw someone mention Christmas being held on June 25th 2021. Sign me up. Euros will have just started. Decent weather. Christmas bbq.
Give us a few bank holidays and we are set.
June 25th is actually a friday as well. It's fate.
If you're feeling down about the teacher bashing going on atm, let this be a reminder of the impact you could be having on the people that matter the most.
@emmccatt
Absolutely not. We already have the shortest summer break in Europe. It wouldn't even be 4 weeks for many, as GCSE/A Level results mean staff will be in school after 2 weeks. From a safeguarding perspective the break can be tough, but we also need that time to recharge.
Over 1400 years ago Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and a Christian Monk named Bahira, met under the shade of a tree. That same tree was believed discovered still alive in the northern deserts of Jordan. The only tree alive in hundreds of miles of emptiness.
A thread on the Blessed Tree…
Took a big step today (for me, anyway) and had my first phone call with the Talking Therapy team. It was just an assessment call, but it potentially gets the ball rolling. Nearly put it off, but didn't. Felt good.
Imagine those people that are struggling with an unhealthy relationship with food. They see the front pages and now have the fate of the NHS added to their concerns. It's so irresponsible. I'd also argue the greatest long term health challenge is poverty.
Obesity is one of the greatest long term health challenges that we face as a country.
We will tackle obesity by supporting people to make the healthiest choices for themselves and their families, and help protect the NHS.
