Especially during wartime, fake information is everywhere. The ability to analyze original sources & evaluate secondary claims is vital in combatting the flood of disinfo. In a new @JStatEd paper, @StatModeling & I give a step-by-step outline for teaching data literacy. [1/9]

Thanks to the editors & to my co-author for helping this idea come to life. Data literacy matters for everyone—it helps us to reason, communicate, and make better decisions every single day. Here’s the article (it’s open access!): ∎.

3. Finally, the course has so many ways it can be modified. A student wants to graph in Python? Great, let them! Teaching in a Slavic dept? Try a regional-language archive. Need to pivot online to meet the needs of remote learners? Loads of virtual collab tools available. [8/9].

2. Our template leans heavily on @tableau (free for students!) instead of R/Python bc of the former’s low barrier to entry. In 4 yrs of this course at @UofT & @NavalAcademy, students learn the tech after a tutorial or two, leaving them more time for mastering fundamentals. [7/9].

The best way to combat Holocaust denial is through baseline knowledge + data literacy. Instagram dramatizations ( & YouTubers at Auschwitz ( are not always bad, if viewers know how to confirm or deny the credibility of their claims.

Social media star Montana Tucker documented her experience visiting Auschwitz in two-minute long TikTok reels. Now the Holocaust doc is on YouTube.

Over the course, we spend weeks learning about the Holocaust—analyzing testimonies in @USCShoahFdn, poring over the seemingly endless @ArolsenArchives, & meeting with curators from @HolocaustMuseum. The scaffolded assignments for this learning can be found in the article. [5/9].

For example, I teach this course in Jewish Studies, where students learn about both antisemitism & error terms through the @ADL Global100 dataset. We pick apart headlines on Jewish Ivy League admits & whether millennials really don’t know about Auschwitz. And so much more. [4/9]
