So much going on, but I'm pleased to share my study of the vernacular politics of gender construction. As a former pastry chef, I gathered data from 600 hours of cooking shows to unpack what I term "conservative gender edutainment.". Read @PoliticsGender

Turkey's Diyanet ramps up the policing of women's bodies, behaviors, and rights. Its Aug 1 sermon condemned tight garments as "clothed nudity.". This policing of women's dress, speech, and roles also takes place on TV. Like in the cooking shows I studied:.

Before my PhD, I worked in arts + media. Regimes invest lots in AV media, but Pol Sci largely doesn't engage it. So I was thrilled to see images in the proofs for Film-Making the Nation Great Again with @JonasDraege . We analyze autocrats' AV instrumentalizations of history.

This project was three years in the making (baking?) and I am grateful to @fulyafelicity, @SefaSecen3, and Ronay Bakan for research assistance. I very much hope political scientists will be inspired to dive deeper into entertainment media as a site where politics takes place.

In the US in this week alone we've got a ramp up of authoritarian consolidation and cultural engineering. Everywhere from universities to sports teams. I draw attention to entertainment media spaces in which those processes happen. Like cooking shows.

In my new article in @PoliticsGenderJ, I draw on my cooking school experience to demonstrate how politics really is everywhere. This week, a MasterChef Türkiye judge tasted a dish made with what a contestant calls “red grape juice.” References to alcohol are forbidden.

I’ve been a huge fan of @Turkeyrecap from the start. It’s an excellent independent news source on Turkey. So it’s an extra bonus to join them to chat about my work. And to connect my projects on the role of media in politics to Turkey’s rapidly unfolding developments.
Author and scholar @LiselHintz joined @diegocupolo on Recap radio to discuss the Turkish media landscape. They also covered the PKK peace process, judicial pressure on the CHP and the AKP’s grand strategy for the ‘New Turkey’.

With @haarunercan, we argued the AKP initially didn't risk mass protest by arresting CHP mayors. We argued permissive prejudice allowed such arrests against pro-Kurdish mayors. We suggested after 2023 elections, CHP might face tactics honed against Kurds.
