So much going on, but I'm pleased to share my study of the vernacular politics of gender construction. As a former pastry chef, I gathered data from 600 hours of cooking shows to unpack what I term "conservative gender edutainment.". Read @PoliticsGender

With so much going on, it’s hard for anyone to focus. My MENA writing group aims to provide structure and solidarity. We just finished Week 122. Today we had a new participant. MENA scholars at all levels are welcome to join to meet writing deadlines. Message or email me!.

Turkey's Diyanet ramps up the policing of women's bodies, behaviors, and rights. Its Aug 1 sermon condemned tight garments as "clothed nudity.". This policing of women's dress, speech, and roles also takes place on TV. Like in the cooking shows I studied:.

Before my PhD, I worked in arts + media. Regimes invest lots in AV media, but Pol Sci largely doesn't engage it. So I was thrilled to see images in the proofs for Film-Making the Nation Great Again with @JonasDraege . We analyze autocrats' AV instrumentalizations of history.

Getting these ads in this order is telling. Adams tries to make fun of the grift he’s accused of engaging in, but to me it lands flat.

This project was three years in the making (baking?) and I am grateful to @fulyafelicity, @SefaSecen3, and Ronay Bakan for research assistance. I very much hope political scientists will be inspired to dive deeper into entertainment media as a site where politics takes place.

I then analyze how competition shows engage in "othering" women contestants who do not comply with the regime's ideals. Think barbed comments and low scores for outspoken, midriff-baring women. All in a reality format that producers - aware of regime oversight - heavily curate.

I analyze how host-based shows engage in "modeling" regime-prescribed behavior for women. Think of a Rachael Ray-esque "girl-next-door" type who provides tips and life hacks. Like how to please mothers-in-law by using their recipes and husbands by dressing up.

Channeling my past as a pastry chef, I draw on 600 hours of cooking show content to analyze "conservative gender edutainment. I assemble a dataset of Turkish cooking shows (2002-2022) to demonstrate how media ownership shifts and crony capitalism shape regime-aligned content.

In the US in this week alone we've got a ramp up of authoritarian consolidation and cultural engineering. Everywhere from universities to sports teams. I draw attention to entertainment media spaces in which those processes happen. Like cooking shows.

In my new article in @PoliticsGenderJ, I draw on my cooking school experience to demonstrate how politics really is everywhere. This week, a MasterChef Türkiye judge tasted a dish made with what a contestant calls “red grape juice.” References to alcohol are forbidden.

I’ve been a huge fan of @Turkeyrecap from the start. It’s an excellent independent news source on Turkey. So it’s an extra bonus to join them to chat about my work. And to connect my projects on the role of media in politics to Turkey’s rapidly unfolding developments.

With @haarunercan, we argued the AKP initially didn't risk mass protest by arresting CHP mayors. We argued permissive prejudice allowed such arrests against pro-Kurdish mayors. We suggested after 2023 elections, CHP might face tactics honed against Kurds.
